HP Envy x360 Convertible 15m-bp0xx
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

For the fourth time in my laptop’s 3-year lifespan, the touchpad has just entirely stopped working for no apparent reason. Previous times I’ve managed to fix it by disabling the device and re-enabling it in the Device Manager, but this time nothing I try is working. This appears to be a pretty common issue amongst HP Envy owners, so I really hope this issue can be patched as soon as possible. So far, I have tried:

1) Disabling the touchpad (“Synaptics SMbus Clickpad”) and re-enabling it in the device manager

2) Entering the bios to see if it was disabled there (there wasn’t even any touchpad or mouse listed under the System Configurations tab, or any tab for that matter

3) Updating the touchpad driver through the Device Manager. It updated, and I restarted my PC afterwards, but to no avail

4) Updating Windows. I’ve now done 2 Windows updates and am now on version 1903, OS build 18362.387. This has changed nothing about the touchpad either.

5) Uninstalling the entire device and its drivers in the Device Manager, then having it check for hardware changes. It didn’t detect any, so I tried downloading the driver from the official HP website. It told me that a newer version of the driver was already installed and asking if I wanted fo overwrite it.. RIGHT after I supposedly uninstalled the device and all of its drivers. Ugh.

I also did both of the HP Hardware UEFI tests on the mouse, as well as a quick test on the entire system. No issues were found in either case. It gave me an error message in the Device Manager, saying “The device is not present, not working properly, or does not have all it’s drivers installed (Code 24)”. I’ve attached a few photos of the pop ups I’ve been getting. If anybody can help me make sense of what is going on I’d really appreciate it. College is hard enough without stressing over my possessed laptop that occasionally decides to just stop functioning!! I feel like I’ve tried everything in my power. I don’t even know much about computers, I’ve just been searching these forums trying everything in hopes that something will work. My next step is to try and reboot my system from a previous date when the touchpad worked, but at this point I really doubt it will work. Please help!!

Edit: My laptop wouldn’t let me do a system restore because it couldn’t extract a file related to my school OneDrive account?? Considering just throwing the whole thing out the window. Any insight at all is appreciated!!

So I managed to fix the issue by downloading some drivers posted on this forum by user Paul_Tikkanen in 2016, manually choosing them as my clickpad driver in the Device Manager, then performing a hard reset on my laptop (just holding the power button to turn it completely off and back on)

I'm super glad it worked, but still very confused and annoyed about why this happened.

Here's the link that to the driver files I used:
