Hello,

 

I have bought a HP FX900 pro SSD M2 1TB drive (p/n: 4A3U0AA#ABB) with s/n: [edit]. I have installed it in an Asus Vivobook pro M3500Q Laptop with AMD 5800H CPU (PCIe v.3 interface). The drive is very fast, indeed, but it is clearly buggy!

When it’s temperature is slightly elevated (about 40°C – which is not very high and it should be problem free) the drive stops working and is shows as it is disconnected from the system!

 In details:

OS is windows 11 pro 64 EN latest edition.

I am using “CrystalDiskInfo v.8.17.14” to monitor the drives temperature, with the fastest update time (every minute).

After any increased disk activity (I am using “CrystalDiskMark v8.0.4c for simulating this disk activity) the temperature of the drive increases around 40°C, which is not too high.

When this increased temperature happens, after some time, the system suddenly freezes. The computer reboots with no appearance of any BSOD.

The POST BIOS screen appers stating that there is no HD drive connected to the system.

If I power down the laptop the system boots normally.   

I have not removed the graphene thermal pad of the HP FX900 pro SSD.

Following the configuration that ASUS had with the original drive, I’ve used a sticky thermal pad to have good thermal conduction between the graphene pad of the HP FX900 pro and the copper heatsink that exists on the back cover of the Asus. Please note that this copper heatsink is covered by a thin layer of plastic.

For testing purposes, I removed the sticky thermal pad and left only the graphene one, with no significant difference (the problem was still occurring).

Please note that I have not change anything on the windows settings, which are default (Windows write-cache buffer flushing on the device is Turned On).

Please advise what to do. Is the drive defective? Should I ask for a repair? 14 days from the time of purchase have passed, so I cannot ask my money back.

After a lot of experimentation, I've finally managed to find the bug. It seems that when I force the SSD to not enter any power saving state, the problem dissapears. 

I've enabled  Primary NVMe Idle Timeout" setting in Control Panel / Power Options / Edit  Plan Settings /  Change Advanced Power Settings /

and put both values at 0, effectively disabling any power state change for the FX900 pro.

The problems that I was facing, with frequent system and drive freezes, just dissapear!

So, I reckon it is a bug of the FX900 pro effecting its power state transition.

Will HP address this issue?

We need a firmware update.
