I'm wondering if the HP USB-C Dock G5 is fully compatible with the Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 2?

ThinkPad doesn't want to recognize it, what do I have to do?

Hello @le_sare ,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for reaching out to us with your query.

The HP USB-C Dock G5 can work with many non-HP laptops (including ThinkPads), but full compatibility is not guaranteed.
These docks are optimized for HP systems, and Lenovo systems sometimes require extra configuration because:

  • The USB-C implementation (Alternate Mode, power delivery, and data lanes) may differ

  • Dock drivers or firmware might be expecting HP-specific protocols

  • Some features (display, Ethernet, audio, etc.) may work only partially or after setup

Below are the few things you can try

🔹 1. Use the Correct USB-C Port

Check your ThinkPad T14 Gen 2 — it may have:

  • USB-C with Thunderbolt / Alt Mode

  • USB-C without Alt Mode

Try plugging the dock into each USB-C port one at a time.

2. Install Latest Drivers on the ThinkPad

Make sure both of these are installed:

A. USB / Chipset drivers
Go to Lenovo Support → enter your T14 Gen 2 model → install all latest chipset & USB drivers.

B. DisplayLink drivers (if your dock uses DisplayLink)
Some HP USB-C docks use DisplayLink for video — and on non-HP systems you must install DisplayLink drivers from:

Install, reboot, then connect the dock.

3. Update Firmware

HP USB-C Dock G5 firmware may need updating.
You’ll need an HP system (or someone with one) to run the HP Dock Firmware Update Utility. This update has been known to improve compatibility.

4. Windows Updates

Make sure Windows itself is fully updated — sometimes recent USB/Thunderbolt fixes help.

5. Verify Power Delivery

If the laptop does not charge when connected:

  • Make sure the dock is plugged into its own power

  • Check that the dock supports the wattage your ThinkPad needs (usually 65W+)

Hope this helps!
