Hello,
Our HP G72 had been randomly shutting off on its own without any warning within the past month or so. It isn't running hot when this occurs, so we don't believe that it's an overheating issue. This also happens when any application is running. It's around 8 years old now, so we're wondering if it's just time to invest in a completely new laptop or if a more simple solution can be made. Please let us know if you need more information. Thank you in advance for any assistance you can provide. We appreciate it.

Welcome to the HP Support Community!
I recommend you update the BIOS and the graphics driver from the below link and check if it helps.

If you continue facing the issue, then follow the below steps and run a system test on the computer to make that there is no hardware issue.
- Turn on the computer.
- Immediately press the f2 key repeatedly, about once every second, until the UEFI menu opens.
When the UEFI menu opens, select the diagnostic test you want to run, and then follow the on-screen instructions.
NOTE: If you need to stop a diagnostic test, press esc.
