Hi, the IR camera on my laptop is constantly failing. Why is this happening? Uninstalling and reinstalling the device fixes it temporarily but it will fail again with the same symptoms in a couple days.

Hi @SnoWFLakE0s

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query.

I understand that your HP IR camera is constantly failing. The failure often shows up as a “STATUS_DEVICE_POWER_FAILURE” or Code 10 error, meaning the camera driver or hardware doesn’t wake correctly from sleep. Updating drivers, BIOS, and chipset firmware can reduce the frequency, but in many cases it points to a deeper hardware. Here are the steps to resolve.

Update Drivers

  • Open HP Support Assistant or go to the HP Support website. https://support.hp.com/au-en/products
  • Search for your laptop model.
  • Download and install the latest IR camera driver.
  • Restart your system after installation.

Verify in Device Manager

  • Press Windows + S and type Device Manager.
  • Expand Imaging devices.
  • Look for your IR camera.
  • If you see a yellow warning symbol, it indicates a driver or hardware issue.

Reinstall the Camera Driver

  • In Device Manager, right‑click the IR camera.
  • Select Uninstall Device.
  • Restart your laptop.
  • Windows will automatically reinstall the driver during reboot.

Update BIOS

  • Visit the HP Support website. https://support.hp.com/au-en/products
  • Enter your laptop’s model number.
  • Download the latest BIOS update.
  • Follow HP’s instructions carefully to install it (ensure your laptop is plugged in during the update).

Check Windows Privacy Settings

  • Go to Settings > Privacy > Camera.
  • Ensure “Allow apps to access your camera” is turned ON.
  • Scroll down and confirm that specific apps (like Zoom, Teams, etc.) have permission.

Perform System Restore/Repair

  • If the camera worked previously, use System Restore:
  • Search for System Restore in Windows.
  • Choose a restore point when the camera was functioning.
  • If issues persist, run Windows Repair:
  • Open Settings > Update & Security > Recovery.
  • Select Reset this PC (choose Keep my files if you don’t want to lose data)

Hope this helps, Please revert if the issue persists.

Take care and have an amazing day!

I'm an HP Employee.

This is all incredibly obvious. I've done everything possible in software; reinstalling Win11 lets the camera work for like a day and it goes back to failing exactly the same way. What the hell is going on?
