Common problems for Battery

Hello support team,

my notebook keyboard is not working after wake-up from sleep. I updated all drivers and i also reinstalled windows so the problem comes from the notebook itself. Is there any solution or probably a bios fix. I already installed the newest avaliable bios update.

Best regards

Luis

Hi @Lusto401

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand how inconvenient it must feel to have the keyboard stop responding after waking from sleep, especially since you’ve already updated drivers, reinstalled Windows, and applied the latest BIOS update. You’ve been very thorough, so let’s go through a few more steps that can help isolate and resolve this behavior.

Power Reset
Shut down the notebook completely. Disconnect the power adapter and, if removable, the battery. Hold the power button for 15–20 seconds. Reconnect power and turn the notebook back on. This clears residual states that can interfere with wake‑up functions.

Check Device Manager Settings
Open Device Manager → Keyboards → right‑click your keyboard → Properties → Power Management tab.
Ensure “Allow this device to wake the computer” is enabled. If the option is missing, disable and re‑enable the keyboard driver.

Update Chipset and Input Drivers
Even after reinstalling Windows, it’s important to install the latest chipset and input drivers from HP’s support page for your notebook model.

Test with External Keyboard
Connect a USB keyboard and wake the notebook from sleep. If the external keyboard works, this confirms the issue is limited to the built‑in keyboard’s wake behavior.

Adjust Sleep Settings
Go to Settings → System → Power & battery → Additional power settings → Change plan settings → Change advanced power settings.
Expand Sleep → USB settings → USB selective suspend setting → set to Disabled. This prevents the keyboard controller from being suspended too deeply.

Run HP Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI)
Restart the notebook and press F2 repeatedly to enter HP PC Hardware Diagnostics. Run the extensive test for keyboard and input devices.

You’ve already taken strong steps with BIOS and driver updates. At this stage, checking the keyboard’s power management settings and disabling USB selective suspend are the most promising actions.

Hello @Hawks_Eye

Thank you for your response. I tried all your solutions but the keyboard is still not working after wake-up. I tried a bluetooth connected keyboard. With the bluetooth keyboard there is no issue with input after wake-up. I tried also to install windows 10 instead of windows 11 but with the same problem. So it is not a software Problem and the problem exists only with the internal keyboard. What can i do now? I dont have warranty anymore for the device and i dont think hp is rolling out a newer bios anymore. I have now the Bios Firmware F.35.

Is there maybe an advanced bios option to change a setting of the keyboard? I tried many combinations, but i can not activate the advanced tab.

Hi @Lusto401

Thank you for the detailed follow‑up and for testing so thoroughly. I understand how discouraging it feels when the internal keyboard still fails after wake‑up, even though you’ve already tried Windows 10, Windows 11, BIOS F.35, and external keyboards work fine.

You’ve narrowed this down very well, so let’s focus on hardware‑level checks and controller resets that can sometimes restore functionality.

Steps to try next

1. Embedded Controller Reset

  • Shut down the notebook completely.
  • Disconnect the power adapter.
  • If the battery is removable, take it out.
  • Hold the power button for 30 seconds.
  • Reconnect power and start the notebook.
This clears the embedded controller, which manages the keyboard’s wake signals.

2. Re‑install Keyboard Driver

  • Open Device Manager → Keyboards.
  • Right‑click the internal keyboard → Uninstall device.
  • Restart the notebook.
Windows will reinstall the driver automatically.

3. Check Advanced Power Options

  • Go to Control Panel → Power Options → Change plan settings → Change advanced power settings.
  • Expand PCI Express → Link State Power Management → set to Off.
  • Expand Sleep → Allow hybrid sleep → set to Off.
These settings prevent the controller from entering a state that blocks wake‑up input.

4. Run Hardware Diagnostics

  • Restart and press F2 repeatedly to enter HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI).
  • Run the extensive keyboard test.
Link: HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI)
This will confirm whether the internal keyboard hardware is responding correctly outside of Windows.

5. External USB Keyboard as a workaround
Since you confirmed Bluetooth keyboards work fine after wake‑up, testing with a USB keyboard can help verify whether the issue is isolated to the built‑in keyboard hardware.

What this means

  • If the diagnostics show failures, the internal keyboard hardware is not sending signals after sleep, which points to a hardware limitation rather than software.
  • If diagnostics pass but wake‑up still fails, the embedded controller reset and power option changes are the most effective steps left to try.

You’ve already been very thorough, and I appreciate the effort you’ve put in. Please try the embedded controller reset and diagnostics—these will give the clearest indication of whether the keyboard hardware itself is at fault.
