I purchased an HP laptop from Costco several years ago.  I am still  troubleshooting a slow performance issues.  I noticed that the system was delivered with 12 GB of memory.  It has two chips that are not the same, one 4 and one 8 GB.  Is this a problem?  It has a dual core Intel i3-7100 @ 2.4 GHz processor.  Should the memory consist of the same memory chips, such as two 4 GB or two 8 GB chips.  Would this affect the operational speed?

Hi:

Yes, the memory should run a little better with two memory chips of the same capacity.

Right now the memory is running in the lower performing single channel mode.

With 2 x 8 GB, the memory will run in the better performing dual channel mode.

If it has a mechanical hard drive, that also slows things down.

Get a 2.5" solid state drive someday, and replace the mechanical drive.
