I have 5 Model 15-ef2729wm laptops.
4 of them all have developed the same issue within months of each other.
The screen begins to flicker in and out on and off or distorts the desktop with horizontal lines in and out rapidly.
When I opened them I discovered that the video cable that goes from the center of the motherboard and snakes around to the hinge shows signs of being impinged.
removing the cable from under hinge worked for a couple of months, but now the problem is back.
If it were 1 laptop I would blame it on use and user. But 4 failures seems more to me a design issue.
Does anyone know if there is a fix for this issue?
Thank you.

Hi @uofcmarc
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query.
The fact that 4 HP Laptop 15-ef2729wm units developed the same display problem within a similar period is a reasonable basis to investigate a possible common hardware weakness, particularly since you physically observed signs of pinching on the display cable near the hinge.
Moving the cable away from the hinge and seeing the problem disappear temporarily is an important diagnostic clue. It suggests that cable routing, hinge pressure, or damage to the cable may be contributing to the issue. However, it does not establish a confirmed design defect without further testing.
For the HP Laptop 15-ef2729wm (product number 6N090UA), I would recommend the following steps.
- Inspect the display cable and hinge assembly. Check for flattened insulation, sharp bends, abrasion, damaged conductors, loose connectors, and excessive tension as the lid opens and closes.
- Test with a known-good compatible display cable. If replacing or correctly rerouting the cable resolves the flickering, that would strengthen the case for a cable-related failure.
- Connect an external monitor. If the external display remains stable while the built-in screen flickers, the internal display assembly, cable, or panel becomes the primary suspect. If both displays distort, investigate the graphics subsystem as well.
Take care and have an amazing day!
