Hi everyone,
I have an issue with my HP Laptop 15s-fq4000sl that I cannot solve despite several attempts.

Here are the symptoms:

  • The charging LED is solid orange (not blinking).

  • When I hover the mouse over the battery icon in Windows, it only shows “plugged in”.

  • The battery stays at 0% and never increases.

  • If I click on the battery icon, it shows “charging”, but the percentage does not move from 0%.

  • When the battery still had some remaining charge, the laptop worked perfectly without the AC adapter, so the battery was able to power the device normally.

What I have already tried:

  1. Different power outlets → no change.

  2. Updated BIOS to the latest version available on HP’s support page.

  3. Hard reset (disconnected everything and held the Power button for 30 seconds).

  4. Reinstalled the Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery drivers.

  5. HP Hardware Diagnostics results:

    • AC Adapter: PASSED

    • Battery: FAILED – status shows “NOT charging”

  6. The AC adapter is working correctly, the system recognizes it (“plugged in”), and the LED remains solid orange.

Additional information:

  • The battery is relatively new and not worn out (cycle count was low when checked).

  • No drops, impacts, or physical damage.

  • The issue appeared suddenly, without any prior warning signs.

My question is:
What further checks can I perform to determine whether the issue is caused by the battery itself, the charging circuit, the DC-Jack, or the motherboard?
Should I also consider a potential problem related to the RTC/CMOS battery, or is it unlikely in this scenario?

Thanks in advance for any help or similar experiences.

Hi @Stenzio

If the battery test failed, the battery is most likely damaged.

These laptops do not have an RTC/CMOS battery, as it is built into the main battery.
