Common problems for Battery

I plugged in my computer last night to charge it to do some school work and after a little while, it sounded and looked like a firecracker went off. The battery completely burnt up, it burnt a hole into my apartment's desk, it get soot, smoke, and fumes all over the room as well as pieces of plastic from the keyboard flying off. It still smells bad after airing it out all night and this morning. It is a slightly older laptop, but it was working fine before and even if it was older, I do not think it should have exploded and caught fire like it did.
