not having much luck with HP support over facebook
I have recently purchased a laptop, the fan seems to be at 0 RPM reported by speedfan until around 70C and then when the system cools it stays running, even with the cpu at 25C
the fan seems to be time based not temperature based, comes on around 65-70C stays on for maybe 10-20 minutes
model: HP pavilion laptop model 15-eg3009na

Hi @Kcajminer2312,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like your HP Pavilion laptop's fan is not operating as expected. Here are some steps to troubleshoot and address the issue:
**1. Update BIOS and Drivers
A. Check for BIOS Update:
- Go to the HP Support website and enter your laptop's model number.
- Download and install the latest BIOS update for your model. BIOS updates can often address issues with fan control.
B. Update Drivers:
- Ensure that all drivers, especially those related to thermal management, are up-to-date. You can find these on the HP Support website or use Windows Update.
**2. Adjust Power Settings
A. Power Plan Settings:
- Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Change plan settings > Change advanced power settings.
- Check the Processor power management and System cooling policy settings. Set the cooling policy to Active to ensure that the fan stays on as needed.
B. HP Support Assistant:
- Use the HP Support Assistant tool to check for and install any recommended updates or optimizations. This tool can sometimes address issues with hardware performance.
**3. Check for Thermal Issues
A. Clean the Vents:
- Ensure that the laptop’s vents are not obstructed by dust or debris. You can use a can of compressed air to clean out the vents gently.
B. Monitor Temperatures:
- Use a tool like HWMonitor or Core Temp to monitor temperatures and see if they correlate with fan activity. Sometimes, fan behavior might be influenced by the temperature threshold set by the manufacturer.
**4. Perform a Hard Reset
A. Hard Reset:
- Turn off the laptop, unplug it, and remove the battery (if removable). Press and hold the power button for 15-30 seconds. Reinsert the battery, plug in the power cord, and turn on the laptop.
**5. Check for BIOS Settings
A. Access BIOS/UEFI:
- Restart your laptop and enter the BIOS/UEFI settings (usually by pressing F2, F10, Esc, or Del during startup).
- Check for any fan-related settings. Some BIOS versions allow you to adjust fan behavior or view fan diagnostics.
**6. Test in Safe Mode
A. Boot in Safe Mode:
- Restart your laptop and press F8 or Shift+F8 to enter Safe Mode.Observe the fan behavior in Safe Mode to determine if the issue persists outside of the standard operating environment.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

such a generic reply
the fan stays around 3000 RPM with the CPU cooled below 25C
the is staying on far to long, the bios is updated, driver updates won't help here, nether will cleaning the vents
as far as I know the fan is controlled by the bios not windows, so nothing within windows will help
