I purchased a brand new HP Laptop several months ago. Less than 2 months after purchase the battery stopped taking a charge. Swapped the battery with a brand new replacement and less than a month later I’m having the same issue. Replaced the charger cable with a brand new one as well to confirm that wasn’t part of the problem. What are the odds that I’d have 2 bad batteries this quickly? Am I missing something? Note: battery and charger drivers are up to date.

Hi @zilongur,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It's unusual for two new batteries to fail within such a short period. Here are a few steps to help diagnose and potentially resolve the issue.
Check for Hardware Issues
- Battery Connection: Ensure the battery is properly connected. Sometimes, loose connections can cause charging issues.
- Charging Port: Inspect the laptop's charging port for any visible damage or debris that could interfere with charging.
Perform a Battery Calibration
Sometimes, the battery's calibration might be off. Here's how to recalibrate it:
- Charge your laptop to 100%.
- Let it discharge completely until it shuts down due to low battery.
- Charge it back to 100% without interruption.
Run HP Hardware Diagnostics
Most HP laptops come with built-in diagnostics tools. You can access these by restarting your laptop and pressing the appropriate key (usually F2, F10, or ESC) to enter the diagnostics menu. Run a battery test to see if any issues are detected.
Check for BIOS Updates
Sometimes, battery issues can be resolved with a BIOS update. Ensure your BIOS is up-to-date by visiting the HP support website and downloading the latest version for your laptop model.
Check Power Management Settings
Incorrect power settings can sometimes cause battery issues:
- Go to Control Panel > Power Options.
- Select Change plan settings for your current power plan.
- Click Change advanced power settings.
- Ensure settings under Battery are correctly configured.
Check Battery Health
Use HP Support Assistant to check your battery's health:
- Open HP Support Assistant.
- Select My devices.
- Select Battery and follow the prompts to run the battery test.

Perform a Hard Reset
A hard reset can sometimes resolve issues caused by residual electrical charge:
- Turn off your laptop.
- Disconnect all external devices and unplug the power adapter.
- Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds.
- Reconnect the power adapter and turn on the laptop.
Examine Battery Usage Patterns
Avoid using the laptop plugged in all the time, as it can shorten battery lifespan. Allow the battery to discharge periodically.
By following these steps, you should be able to identify the underlying cause of the battery issues.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
