Hello HP Community,

I use my HP laptop for metal detector firmware updates and data logging. Recently, the USB data interface that connects my metal detector’s controller board stopped appearing on my HP laptop.

I have tested the device on another computer, and it works fine there, so it seems to be an issue with the USB drivers or port on my HP system.

I have tried:
- Reinstalling USB drivers
- Updating BIOS and chipset
- Using a different cable and port

Could someone please help me troubleshoot this?

Thank you,
Edited

Hi @BullionDetector,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your HP laptop is not detecting your metal detector’s USB data interface, even though the device works fine on another computer. Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this and help restore USB communication.

Power Reset the Laptop

Disconnect all USB devices and unplug the power adapter.

Press and hold the Power button for 15–20 seconds to discharge any residual power.

Reconnect only the power adapter, start the laptop, and then plug in your metal detector’s USB cable again.

This helps reset the USB controller hardware.

Check Device Manager for Hidden or Unrecognized Devices

Press Windows + X → Device Manager.

Click View → Show hidden devices.

Look under Universal Serial Bus controllers and Ports (COM & LPT).

If you see an Unknown Device or one with a yellow warning triangle, right-click and choose Uninstall device, then unplug and replug your USB interface to reinstall automatically.

Run the Windows Hardware Troubleshooter

Open Settings → System → Troubleshoot → Other troubleshooters.

Locate USB or Hardware and Devices (if listed) and select Run.

Follow on-screen steps to detect and fix driver-related issues automatically.

Manually Reinstall the USB Root Hub Drivers

In Device Manager, expand Universal Serial Bus controllers.

Right-click each USB Root Hub and select Uninstall device.

Restart your laptop — Windows will reinstall all USB controller drivers automatically.

Disable USB Selective Suspend Setting

Go to Control Panel → Power Options → Change plan settings → Change advanced power settings.

Expand USB settings → USB selective suspend setting, and set both On battery and Plugged in to Disabled.

This prevents Windows from turning off USB ports to save power.

Try Device on a Different USB Mode or Port Type

If your laptop has both USB-A and USB-C ports, try connecting through the other type.

For USB-C, ensure you’re using a data-capable cable, not a charge-only cable.

Check for Hidden COM Port Assignment

Some data interfaces appear as Virtual COM Ports.

In Device Manager → Ports (COM & LPT), look for any new COM device when connecting your metal detector.

If it’s listed but not working, right-click → Properties → Port Settings → Advanced, and assign a different COM number (e.g., COM3 or COM4).

I hope this helps.
