Hi,
I have a HP Pavilion Laptop.
The Graphics card is Intel(R) UHD Graphics 620.
I have a Monitor attached. The Monitor is HP EliteDisplay E243.
I am running the latest version of Windows 11. (Updated on 03.11.2025)
The monitor is connected to the laptop via HDMI cable.
My problem is that the monitor is continually going black so that I have to use the laptop screen most of the time.
I have updated the graphics card driver from the Intel website.
I have tried to update the Monitor driver but the HP website does not allow me to select Windows 11 as the Operating System. Device Manager says that the best drivers are already installed for the monitor.
I have changed the HDMI cable a few times and the problem persists.
Is there any solution to this?
Thanks.
Anthony.

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.
Thank you for explaining the issue so clearly—and I’m genuinely sorry your HP EliteDisplay E243 keeps going black when connected to your Pavilion laptop.
Since you've already updated drivers and swapped HDMI cables, let's walk through a deeper set of steps to help restore stable display output.
Step-by-Step: Fix HP Monitor Going Black Intermittently via HDMI
1. Confirm Display Configuration
- Right-click on the desktop > Display settings.
- Scroll to Multiple displays and confirm:
- Your monitor is detected.
- Mode is set to Extend or Duplicate (not “Show only on 1”).
- Click Advanced display settings and confirm:
- Resolution is set to 1920 × 1080 (Recommended).
- Refresh rate is set to 60 Hz.
A mismatch in refresh rate or resolution can cause flickering or blackouts.
2. Disable Panel Self Refresh (Intel Graphics)
- Open Intel Graphics Command Center.
- Go to Display > Power.
- Turn off Panel Self Refresh.
This feature can interfere with external monitors and cause blanking.
3. Update Monitor INF File Manually
Download the HP EliteDisplay E243 INF driver from:
HP EliteDisplay E243 Monitor Driver
Extract the ZIP file.
Open Device Manager > Monitors.
Right-click Generic PnP Monitor > Update driver > Browse my computer.
Select the extracted folder and install.
This ensures proper EDID communication between the monitor and Windows 11.
4. Test with a Different Port or Adapter
- If your laptop has USB-C with DisplayPort, try using a USB-C to HDMI adapter.
- Alternatively, test with VGA or DisplayPort if available on the monitor.
This helps isolate whether the HDMI port is causing instability.
5. Run HP UEFI Diagnostics
- Restart your laptop and press Esc repeatedly.
- Press F2 to open HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI.
- Run Component Tests > Video Output.
This checks for hardware-level faults in the graphics subsystem.
6. Disable Sleep and Power Saving on Monitor
- Press the Menu button on the monitor.
- Navigate to Power Settings.
- Turn off:
- Auto Sleep
- Power Saving Timer
Prevents the monitor from entering sleep mode unexpectedly.
Let me know how the monitor responds after applying these steps. If the issue persists, I can guide you through checking event logs or testing with a different display profile.
You're doing everything right—this sequence should help restore consistent external display performance.
