HP Notebook - 15-da0511sa
  • I would like to upgrade my current HP-15-da0511sa laptop, product number: 4AQ30EA#ABU hdd to ssd. Currently it has the 1 Tb 2.5 inch SATA harddrive. Do I simply replace this hdd with a M.2 SATA-3 ssd or can I consider adding the PCIe, NVMe, M2 solid state drive for optimal performance, keeping the current hdd for storage thereby changing it to dual boot? I'm not sure from my product number whether this is possible, the manual makes no distinction so i see no issue with it. I am upgrading the memory to 16GB as well. I have an Intel Core I3 7020u processor. If feasible, which PCIe would you recommend? Tia.

Thank you for your quick response. I did see that but I'm not too familiar with upgrades so I wasn't too sure how to interpret that. I appreciate your support!

I notice that the manual dated 2018 specs smaller sizes - 250 gb. Is it safe to go for a bigger NVME, say 1 Tb that you mentioned? Thanks once again..

@DirkS3,

Yor service manual (pages 2-3) indicates your model has an M.2 slot that supports both Nvme and SATA SSDs. The model also supports dual storage configuration (M.2 NVMe SSD and 2.5" HDD).

There're many good NVMe M.2 SSDs. Here are a couple of them:

Amazon.com: Crucial P3 1TB PCIe Gen3 3D NAND NVMe M.2 SSD, up to 3500MB/s - CT1000P3SSD8 : Electroni...

Amazon.com: Western Digital 1TB WD Blue SN570 NVMe Internal Solid State Drive SSD - Gen3 x4 PCIe 8Gb...

The size of NVMe SSD listed in the manual is just one HP used for some models and doesn't mean the max size your model supports. Technically, NVMe SSDs have no size limit. You should be fine with a 1TB NVMe.

Page 47 of the manual explains how to install an M.2 drive. This YouTube video for 15-da0xxx may be of help. You'll see an M.2 NVMe SSD to the right of the battery.

Thank you for your advice Tk_srq. I'll let you know it went.

I have one more thought. The manual states that the Intel core processors have two memory slots of DDR4 2400mhz memory (in my case) and supports up to 16 GB of RAM. I guess this is not flexible and is in fact the upper limit as stated? Tia.

I see that 32GB is the limit. That is good news.

You can upgrade your HP-15-da0511sa laptop by adding an M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD for optimal performance while keeping your current 1TB HDD for storage. Ensure the M.2 slot supports PCIe NVMe. For your Intel Core i3-7020U, a 1TB NVMe SSD should work fine despite the manual's smaller size recommendations. For memory, upgrading to 16GB is a good choice. Recommended NVMe SSDs include the Samsung 970 Evo or WD Black SN750. Always check compatibility with the laptop's specifications.
