I want to upgrade my HP Notebook 15-dy1051wm SSD, but for the life of me I cannot find if the motherboard has 2 slots or just 1 slot for SSD, can I just buy a new one, or do I need to upgrade my current SSD

Hi:
HP only has the service manual for the older 15-dy0xxx notebooks with the Intel 8th gen core processors.
Maintenance and Service Guide HP 15 Laptop PC
According to chapter 1, there is only one M.2 slot for a SSD, so you will need to purchase a NVMe SSD having a greater storage capacity and remove the existing one.
If you want a couple of recommendations...the Samsung 980 (not 980 Pro) or the Western Digital Blue SN570.
Your notebook is supported by the HP cloud recovery tool.
You can use the HP cloud recovery tool and a 32 GB USB flash drive to create a bootable USB recovery drive that will reinstall W10, the drivers and the software that originally came with your notebook on the new SSD.
Here is an info link for how to use the utility.
