I have an HP Notebook - 17-Ca0095nr. The motherboard has a place for an m.2 expansion socket but the socket is missing. Can I have an m.2 expansion socket installed? What else would be required?

Hi:

Even if you could add a M.2 slot, it would hardly be worth the trouble and expense because the slot only supports SATA M.2 SSD's in the notebooks with the AMD 'A' series processors.

You can get exactly the same performance by replacing the 2.5" mechanical hard drive with a 2.5" SATA SSD.

Below is the link to the service manual.

Maintenance and Service Guide HP 17 Laptop PC

Chapter 3, page 24 has the list of parts required to add a M.2 SSD slot.

Solid-state drive board    HP part # L24487-001
Solid-state drive bracket HP part # L22535-001

HP sells the parts, but they are very expensive and one of the parts is on backorder.

You're looking at around $100 for the parts which don't include the screws you need to secure the parts to the motherboard.

HP Parts Store - HP Computer Parts - HP Printer Parts - Compaq Parts

And there is no guarantee after you install those parts that a SATA SSD will work.

Save your money and buy a 1 TB 2.5" SATA SSD for half the price of those parts.
