HP Notebook 17-x173dx
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Laptop stop charging at 86%. It is not charging upto 100%.

I have done following Battery Diagnostics:

1. HP Support Assistant

2.Component Test

3.Windows Troubleshooting

Results of all the above Diagnostics indicates OK message.

All the above Diagnostics were also unable to solve the issue.

@MENTALIST Nice, Inspired by the TV series or? you are one? 😉

Here's a few things you need to do, to resolve the issue with the battery not charging all the way to 100%, most likely a driver issue, here's how to fix it:

  • Unplug the charge, Turn off the laptop and turn it back on after 30mins.
  • Reinstalled Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery under device manager:

1) In the search box, type and open “Device Manager”.

2) Expand “Batteries”.

3) Right-click the "Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery" that is listed there.

4) Click on “Uninstall”.

5) At the prompt put a check in the box to remove the current driver

6) Shutdown the computer.

7) Remove the battery for a minute and then put it back in. (Skip this step if you have a non removable battery)

8 - When the computer comes back up it should automatically find the driver.

9) Go to Device Manager.

10) Expand Batteries.

11) Right-click the "Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery" that is listed there.

12) Click "Search automatically for updated driver software"

Do the same thing with Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Embedded Controller.

If the issue persists, run a battery and adapter test using the steps mentioned in this link: Click here

@MENTALIST The reason I mentioned about the reinstallation is because you had mentioned about it, asking if you need to "reinstall windows again", that said, about the battery, you may want to run a battery and adapter test using the steps mentioned in this link: Click here as advised before and get back to us with the results.

The results of Battery and Adapter test using HP  PC Hardware Diagnostics was PASSED

@MENTALIST That would mean that the device may not have any hardware issues, but a software malfunction, in this case, the best way forward is to obtain a recovery media as suggested before and make use of the same to reinstall the OS using the same, please check the link from my previous post.

"If you don't have an HP Recovery media and have attempted reset using the windows troubleshooter or a retail copy of windows, you'll need to order a recovery media: Click here for steps. Or you may also attempt to download the same using the steps on this link: click here, For details on how to perform a successful reset: click here"

Keep me posted,

And good luck!
