Hello,
I have a HP Notebook - 15-ay091ms which is having the 8GB RAM and it can be upgraded to 16GB. The HP Notebook RAM details
8 GB DDR3L-1600 SDRAM (1 x 8 GB)
I have another old laptop which has the RAM as per below
6GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM (1 x 2GB + 1 x 4GB)
DIMM,2GB,1333MHZ,256X64,8K,204
DIMM,4GB,1333MHZ,512X64,8K,204
So, can I use the old laptop's 4GB ram and install in HP Laptop to make it 8GM + 4GM = 12 GB ? is these two RAMs are compatable? Please advise.
Thanks

Hi:
The memory won't work unless it is DDR3L (1.35V).
DDR3 memory is 1.5V
If it is 1.35V, it still may not work, or if it does it will only run at 1333 MHz.
I also recommend that you open up the notebook and confirm that DDR3L memory is actually installed.
According to the Crucial memory report and the service manual for your notebook, it uses DDR4-2133 memory, so something is not correct.

I found the same info on the specs page as you did...DDR3L.

If your notebook actually does have DDR3L memory installed, then this would be a compatible 8 GB memory chip.

You're very welcome.
That is what I wrote yesterday. The info is confusing and contradictory.
The service manual and the crucial memory report indicate the memory is DDR4-2133 and only the product specs indicate the memory is DDR3L-1600.
I guess the only way you will be able to figure out exactly what type of memory is installed would be to run the free utility that I zipped up and attached below.
It will tell you if the installed memory is DDR3L-1600 or DDR4-2133.
Then you can buy the right memory you need.

You're very welcome.
OK, so the specs are wrong, and the Crucial memory report and service manual were correct.
HP installed a DDR4-2400 memory chip that is running at 2133 MHz, because that is a fast as your notebook's processor can run the memory at. It is actually running at 1,066.5 MHz because you have to divide the 2133/2 because the memory is only running in single channel mode with one slot empty.
Your old notebook's DDR3 memory definitely will not work.
It won't even fit in the slot.
If you want to upgrade the memory, you will need to buy the recommended Crucial chip for your notebook.

Thanks, The RAM is costing me $31+tax
The main idea behind this request is to see what are the options for speed up my computer. I went to the internet and applied some tips to improve and it is better now. Being the Laptop is very old one, is it worth putting more money on it? I am not sure. I would have to tell you one thing, this product is highly reliable one and the laptop monitor/screen was cracked and I have removed it. I am using this laptop with connecting to an external monitor. Another Idea to improve the speed is to change the regular HDD to SSD but 500GB costs around $50.00
Please advise how to improve the speed of my laptop.

You're very welcome.
Since the notebook is not in great shape, I would not invest any money into it.
If it had been in excellent shape, I would definitely have put $80 into it for the extra memory and 2.5" SATA SSD.
Since the notebook is old those parts would not be transferrable to a new model which uses faster speed DDR4 memory, and the 2.5" mechanical hard drives have been replaced by faster NVMe M.2 2280 SSD's.
The new NVMe SSD's are like the size and shape of a stick of chewing gum.
