HP OMEN 17-an0xx

hello, my omen 17 came up with only 8 GB of ram ddr4 2400MHz as the website says. I am planning to upgrade it with aother 8GB from a Lenovo but it's 2133 MHz ddr4. is there a chance it might not work or damage anything? on the internet says it will limit the 2400 to run at 2133, not a significant downgrade, not noticeable.

also, as I read about the seller, if you upgrade by yourself you lose the Warranty. you shouldn't, right? is there any chance they can know you actually did it? can they add extra warranty stickers / glue? might sound stupid but can't think of any other way.

thanks!

@vladnmp,

Good day. Thank you for reaching out to the community. It will be an honor to assist you with the requested information. The research done by you is interesting. Good description of the issue also. Kudos to you for the description.

At the outset, HP does not recommend an upgrade or downgrade of either the operating system or the computer's hardware. Nevertheless, some customers upgrade at their own discretion. So regarding the ram upgrade, you need to keep a few things in mind.

  • First off, the RAM should be of the same type, DDR4.
  • Secondly, the RAM module should be of the same bus speed otherwise it will not work.
  • It involves a certain combination of configurations specific to this computer in which the upgrade works.
  • The memory stick should be HP certified and not a random upgrade.
  • Keeping these things in mind let's get right down to it:
  • Check the Service Manual link:  http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c06001792 and refer to pages 1, 26 and 43 for complete instructions to upgrade the RAM module. It gives you the different configurations supported the bus speeds involved, the required part numbers for the upgrade along with steps on how to replace the RAM module.

Please consult a local technician also to avoid compatibility issues. Hope this answers your questions.

Good luck and keep me posted about the developments. If this helps, please mark this as “Accepted Solution” as it will help several others with the same issue and give the post a Kudos for my efforts to help. Thank you and have a great week ahead. 🙂
