Hello,

I am running Linux Mint 21.3 on a HP Omen 15-ce0xx laptop. By default it had a 8GB 2666MHz DDR4 stick and can support up to 32GB of RAM. I installed two 16GB 2666MHz DDR4 sticks but as the title suggests each stick only counts as 8GB so I only have 16GB not the 32GB I wanted. In the BIOS the same thing occurs so I doubt it's an issue with my distro. I'd be glad if someone helped me.

I would also like to note that this is the RAM I bought (https://www.amazon.pl/Crucial-SO-DIMM-2x16GB-2666MHz-260pin/dp/B07TKZKPJV/ref=sr_1_1?dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ...)

Thank you for your time

Hi @aa_2233,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you’re experiencing an issue where your HP Omen 15-ce0xx laptop is not recognizing the full capacity of the new RAM sticks you installed. Here are some steps you can take to diagnose and potentially resolve this issue:

1. Check RAM Compatibility

  • Verify RAM Specifications: Ensure that the RAM sticks you purchased are compatible with your laptop. According to the Crucial product page you linked, the RAM should be compatible with most systems that support DDR4 2666MHz memory. However, double-check your laptop's documentation to confirm compatibility.

2. Check BIOS Settings

  • Access BIOS: Restart your laptop and enter the BIOS/UEFI settings (usually by pressing a key like F2, F10, DEL, or ESC during startup).
  • Check Memory Information: Look for a section related to memory or RAM information to verify if the BIOS detects the full 32GB. If the BIOS also reports only 16GB, it may indicate a hardware issue.

3. Inspect RAM Installation

  • Reseat RAM Sticks: Turn off your laptop and unplug it from the power source. Open the RAM compartment and ensure both RAM sticks are properly seated in their slots. Sometimes, improper seating can cause the system to misreport the installed memory.
  • Check for Dust or Obstructions: Ensure that the RAM slots and connectors are clean and free from dust or obstructions.

4. Test RAM Sticks Individually

  • Test Each Stick: Try testing each RAM stick individually in different slots to see if the issue persists. This can help determine if one of the sticks or slots is causing the problem.
  • Swap Slots: Try swapping the RAM sticks to different slots and see if the issue persists. This can help identify if there’s a problem with a specific slot.

5. Update BIOS

  • Check for BIOS Update: Sometimes, updating the BIOS can resolve compatibility issues. Check the HP website for any BIOS updates for your laptop model and follow the instructions to update.

6. Check System Information

  • Operating System: Although you mentioned checking in BIOS, verify the total installed memory from within your Linux Mint OS:
    • Open a terminal and run free -h or sudo dmidecode --type memory to check if Linux is recognizing the correct amount of memory.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
