Hi Can I use a docking station with my laptop just for the purpose of transferring data and powering external devices?
I was using HP hub with my omen 2060gtx laptop which got toasted when I plugged in a lot of things in the hub and I would assume laptop port was not designed to give that much power to all perioherals ( 3 usbs, 1 display, 2 extrnal hard and one Bluetooth speaker)
Now I am scared of using hubs with my new laptop. I have read if laptop needs less power than docking can provide then this will be the best use case for dock as it will charge the laptop and also give power to external devices. But in my case my HP omen 17 2023 needs 330W charger which is nowhere any docking station provide. Also thunderbolt 4 usb c cannot deliver more than 100w anyway.
I want to plug in my laptop to the original 330w charger. Now my question is can I also use a dock with power 280w or 200w that I will plug in to my laptop via usb and then I can plug in my external display to the dock along with ethernet adapter and mouse and keyboard with one external hsrd drive.
My only concern is as I plug in the 2nd source of power( 280w dock) along with already connected 330w charger , will I damage the laptop?
I burned last laptop my putting too many things in the hub on the same usb c. This time all I want that all peripherals should get power from dock and the laptop to just recognize and use them.
Possible?

Hi @l1ovel,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
Using a docking station to transfer data and power external devices is a common practice, and it's generally safe when done correctly. However, there are some considerations and precautions to keep in mind.
Power Compatibility:
- Ensure that the combined power from the laptop's original charger and the docking station does not exceed the laptop's maximum power input capacity. In your case, you mentioned a 330W charger, so make sure the total power drawn doesn't surpass this limit.
Docking Station Power:
- If the docking station provides less power than the laptop's original charger, it should be fine. The laptop will draw power primarily from its own charger. The docking station's power will be utilized for connected peripherals.
Connection and Ports:
- Use the appropriate ports for connecting the docking station to the laptop. If you have a Thunderbolt 4/USB-C port on your laptop, use it for the docking station connection to ensure optimal data transfer rates and power delivery.
Check Docking Station Specifications:
- Verify the specifications of the docking station to confirm its power output and compatibility with your laptop model. Different docking stations have varying power delivery capabilities.
Avoid Overloading Ports:
- Distribute the connected devices evenly across the docking station's ports to avoid overloading a single port. This helps prevent issues like the one you experienced with your previous hub.
Check Laptop's User Manual:
- Refer to your HP laptop's user manual to get specific guidance on using docking stations and multiple power sources.
Monitor for Overheating:
- Keep an eye on the laptop's temperature when using multiple power sources and connected devices. Overheating could be a sign of an issue, and you may need to adjust your setup accordingly.
It's essential to be cautious and follow the guidelines provided by HP to ensure the safe use of docking stations and accessories.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
