OMEN by HP Laptop 17-cm2005nt (7P6D8EA)

I’ve been using my HP Omen 17 without issues until recently, when the cooling fans began stopping at random. It doesn’t matter whether the laptop is idle or running games—the fans suddenly stop and the laptop overheats. The system is always set to Performance mode with the fans on Auto, so they normally stay around 2200 RPM. Just before the fans shut off, the monitoring software briefly reports a spike to about 10 000 RPM for a second, then the fans drop to 0 RPM and both stop completely. I used to get an occasional 90B fan error at startup, but lately the laptop boots without that warning and then misbehaves after it has been idle long enough.

I have already contacted HP Support, formatted the system, cleaned the laptop, and confirmed all drivers and the BIOS are up to date. Since software problems seem unlikely, I suspect a hardware fault. Any advice or solutions would be greatly appreciated.

Edit: I recently ran a fan speed test and received the following failure ID: 6C7421-BT2CQG-MFPWWK-J63U03. Important: The test detected a problem with the GPU fan speed, which may need to be replaced.

Based on the issue you're describing, it indeed sounds like you're dealing with a hardware fault related to the cooling fan system. The fact that the fan speed spike occurs and the fans stop completely, coupled with the failure ID you received, points to a likely issue with the GPU fan specifically.

Since you've already taken the necessary steps to rule out software and driver-related causes—by updating the BIOS, drivers, and performing a system reset—this further suggests the problem is hardware-related.

Given that the test indicated a problem with the GPU fan, it would be best to replace the faulty fan to prevent overheating and further damage to the system.
