OMEN Laptop - 17-cb1004nw
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi all,

I recently bought a HP Omen 17-cb1004nw. Everything that came stock is working just fine.

Before I bought this laptop, I planned on transferring an older SSD Sata (non-NVMe) to my Omen 17. I checked the maintenance and service guide (here: https://support.hp.com/us-en/product/omen-17-cb1000-laptop-pc-series/32827283/model/2100022149/manua...) and it says on page 2 of the product description that it is compatible with PCIe/Sata solid state drives. Peachy ...

Anyways, I open it up, take out the dummy "card" from the slot, put the old SSD in, seal it up, turn it on and ... no old SSD anywhere to be found. Everything booted/started up absolutely fine -- just no old SSD anywhere. I removed the new PCIe SSD, try to boot it, and it gives a Hard drive not detected error on boot. I check with a disk utility and yup -- it's like nothing is there. I put the newer SSD in and it boots/starts absolutely fine -- old SSD still missing.

I double-check the manual and notice two things -- SATA compatibility seems to only be for 7mm/7.2mm/2.5" SSDs. The two M.2 slots seem to be only PCIe compatibility. I should have read more carefully, though it wasn't exactly clear. Looking at the list of recommended replacement parts -- all the M.2 SSDs are PCIe NVMe (though this is just stock parts, not necessarily compatibility). It seems like this laptop is not compatible with SATA M.2 SSDs (non-NVMe)

So, questions: First, is my assessment that this laptop is not compatible with M.2 Sata (non-NVMe) SSDs correct? I'm 99% sure on this one, but would like confirmation that it's a compatibility issue and not some other problem.

Second, on page 2 of the product description it lists dual storage configurations. I'm assuming these are stock configurations and not the only configurations? I want to be exactly sure because I want to buy a second 512gb PCIe NVMe SSD and 512+512 is not one of the listed configurations. Again, I'm pretty sure of the answer -- just want confirmation.

Looks like you are correct, the 2 m.2 slots are PCIE 3x4, and the SATA 3 is 2.5". You can use any size m.2 nvme ssd and any size SATA3 hdd you want.
