Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

Hello. Today I got a blue screen message problem on loading Windows so I searched about it. One of the possible problems was "Too many bad sectors on the hard drive" or something of this sort so I ran the long HDD check. The results I got are:

SMART CHECK : PASSED
Long DST : FAILED

FAILURE ID : 64PFJ3-63N90E-QFPK0J-618003
PRODUCT ID : B1N25EA#ABV

Hard Drive 1

It is the 1 TB HDD. I assume that the HDD started to worn out and probably will be gone soon and need to be replaced. The warranty ended maybe 2-3 years ago. Can someone tell me if I'm right or wrong and what can I do about it? I'm not sure which HDD or SSD would work properly with my configuration and possibly I'd like to know if it can work perfectly normal with external ones aswell. What could be a problem in this case and what would be better, if there's something. I've opened and replaced components on a desktops before but I don't have any experience with laptops, since they have too many screws etc. I'd like to know if the HDD that I have is for replacing and with which ones I can replace it if so. I'd like to know about other products aswell, not only HP.

Sorry for the long post and I hope we can figure out this fast and easy, and none of us won't bother much about it.

Hi,

You need to replace the hard drive.

Any 2.5 inch SATA 7mm/9.5mm thick internal hard drive works. Western digital, HGST are some good brands of HDD manufacturers.

Manual: Page 47, it's pretty easy to install a new one

Hope you have HP Recovery USB/DVD created after first setup of this notebook? Use this media to factory reset after adding new HDD.

Your laptop came with Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit pre installed.

Yes, it came with Home Premium when I bought it but I prefer the Ultimate copy I have from my old desktop. I don't have recovery tool but I don't think I will need it either, except if I need to do something to the new HDD so it will work properly, apart from installing the new Windows. The reason I said I don't need it is because I don't need to backup any data or anything, I need a clean install. I just did that 2 days ago, I thought I got a problem from Windows, since I haven't reinstalled it for more than 5 years and had some problems with loading Windows but now I know I lost all my data and did it for nothing. Anyway, thank you for the help and I'll start searching for a new drive. If you don't mind tho, I can use an extra opinion about the external drive, to use one instead of replacing the internal one. If you know if I could do that, if there could be any problems with running Windows normally and storing everything on external drive since I don't really want to bother to open it and replace stuff. I've seen people opening it and it's such an inconvinience. If not, it's ok, I'll mark the topic as solved after your answer anyway.

No you cannot boot from external hard drive.

Opening it up is not hard, only 1 cover door to unscrew to reach HDD bay.
