Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI v8.5.0.0 is not loading on my laptop. I've followed the installation instructions to a T. I've also installed it to a USB device and it still won't access the UEFI. I am able to to get to the startup menu by pressing esc, and I see the Hardware Diagnostics option (F2), but it will not load.

Is there an earlier version of UEFI that I should try instead?

I'm running Windows 10, upgraded from Windows 7.

That is because your notebook has a Pre UEFI BIOS which does not allow the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI to be installed on the hard disk.

Your notebook uses an MBR volume type instead of a modern GPT which is what the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI requires.

Hate to bear bad news, but UEFI will not work with your notebook.

Awesome answer. Thank you for clearing that up! 🙂

I've been trying and searching and have not seen that mentioned as a possible issue/cause anywhere. Thank you! Thank you!

Now....is there any similar diagnostic tool I can use? Something that operates similarly outside of the OS? I'm trying to:

1) recalibrate my battery, and this is the only method I've found, as indicated by HP or anywhere else, for that matter.

2) run a test of my fan to see if it's functioning optimally. I've already cleaned out every bit of dust.

3) maybe run some other diagnostic tests for good measure. But 1 and 2 would be nice to do for sure.

The root of my problem is that the laptop will often slow down when plugged in. I have reset/reinstalled the OS and I also have a brand new battery. I've upgraded the RAM to 2x 4GB chips. I was hoping these upgrades would correct the performance issue when plugged in, but it still kind of happens. Hence my search for a diagnostic to troubleshoot fan and recalibrate battery. I know many folks might say, "Buy a new laptop." But I don't do anything demanding on this one, so I'm hopeful I can improve things to a point where it's a little less temperamental.

I'd love to hear what you think. Thanks!

"Now....is there any similar diagnostic tool I can use? Something that operates similarly outside of the OS?" Unfortunately there is not one that I am aware of.

If the notebook slows down when plugged in you should go into the performance settings and choose the High Performance plan.

Calibrating the battery will only reset the 100% charged to actual and will not enhance the battery service life in any way.

There isn't any fan test present even in the HP PC Hardware Diagnostic UEFI utility. There may be an" Always on" setting that you can use to see if you can make it run. Otherwise, not having a problem with overheating with the processor shutting down along with the notebook is a strong indicator that the fan is working and coming on in according to the DeltaT algorithm in the BIOS ROM file.
