Common problems for Battery

HP Pavilion 13-a058ca
Microsoft Windows 11

I've had this laptop since new (2016) but don't use it much.

Couple years ago I upgraded RAM to 16Gb and replaced HDD with 1Tb SSD.

All was working well.

Insyde BIOS F.41 (21/06/2018)

Windows 11.

A few weeks ago, notebook would not turn ON even with power cable connected.

The small light beside AC plug was blinking white, which I understand means battery issue.

With battery disconnected from the motherboard and AC plugged in, it turned on just fine.

So I installed brand new battery. HP NP03XL.

Initially the AC plug light turned orange and the battery was charging so I thought all was well.

Even showed how long till full charge.

But after a few hours, started blinking white and stopped charging.

Battey icon shows that AC is plugged in, but it is not charging.

I uninstalled the Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery driver several times.

No help.

There doesn't seem to be a HP driver for VEN_PNP & DEV_0C0A

I've reset BIOS settings to original, still no help.

Strange thing is that when I unplug the battery from the motherboard, and plug it back in a few seconds later, it starts to charge for a few minutes (and light turns orange) but after a few minutes starts blinking white and stops charging.

Battery Design Capacity = 42,682 = Full charge capacity.

I'd be grateful for any advice.

Hi   @apwdr,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

I can tell you’ve been very thorough in trying to resolve this, and I completely understand how  it must feel when a brand-new battery still doesn’t behave as expected. You’ve already done a lot of the right steps, so let’s try to narrow this down together.

Here are a few specific  steps you can try:

  1. BIOS update: Even though you’re on F.41, check HP’s support website https://support.hp.com/  for your model to see if a newer BIOS version is available. Sometimes charging logic is improved in later releases.
  2. Battery calibration: In Windows, fully drain the battery until the notebook shuts down, then recharge it uninterrupted to 100%. This can help the system re-learn the battery’s capacity.
  3. Hardware reset: Disconnect AC and battery, then press and hold the power button for 15–20 seconds. Reconnect and test again.
  4. HP Support Assistant: Install or update this utility  it can run diagnostics on the battery and power system.
  5. AC adapter check: If possible, test with another compatible HP adapter. A failing adapter can sometimes provide enough power to run the system but not reliably charge the battery.
  6. Battery diagnostic: Run HP’s built-in battery test (F2 at startup → Diagnostics → Battery Test) to see if the new NP03XL is reporting any faults.

Since you mentioned you’ve made hardware changes (RAM and SSD upgrades), there is a possibility that the power distribution circuitry on the motherboard has been affected. This can cause intermittent charging behaviour despite a healthy battery.

I hope this helps.

Hi @apwdr,

Thank you for getting back.

Since you mentioned a blink code, could you please check if you can make out the exact sequence of blinks (for example: 3 short blinks followed by 2 long blinks)? HP laptops use these blink patterns to indicate specific hardware errors.

You can then compare the sequence with the official HP Blink Codes document here: HP Blink Codes Reference

Once you share the sequence, we can interpret it and guide you to the right fix.

Best regards,

I'm an HP Employee.
