Example: Pavilion CE3xxx
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Dear All,

I recently purchased a Pavilion 14 comes with Core i5 (10th Gen) processor and 512GB NVMe SSD but upgraded with 16GB DDR4. I started using the notebook browsing the internet with new Microsoft Edge (Chromium-based) and sometimes with Chrome, which include youtube, facebook and etc. Not more than 5-6 tabs per session.

I notice the temperature reach as high as 96 degree Celsius just by doing these supposedly 'simple' task and I can hear both fans increasing their respective speeds due to this. Ambient temperature ranging between 27-30 degree Celsius in my country's tropical climate. Is it normal for this to happen? Given that the processor is 10nm which should return a lower working temperature and the notebook is relative new (less than 1 week). I tried reset the windows but it still the same. I even ran HP stock diagnostics software and everything passed without any issue. I am considering either to return this notebook or to change its thermal paste.

Please assist..

Thank you for posting on the HP Support Community.

I have a few troubleshooting steps we could try to fix the issue:
use the following steps:

  • Shut down the computer, and then inspect and clean the exterior vents to remove dust buildup by blowing air through the vent openings. Dust can accumulate inside the vent openings and around internal cooling components, preventing the removal of heat.

For more information on reducing heat inside your computer, see Reducing Heat Inside the PC.

  • After you remove the dust, turn on the computer. If the error message persists, continue with these steps.
  • Perform a hard reset. Performing a hard reset can reset recorded thermal values in memory and enable you to use the computer again, even if only for a short time to access and save any important files before service.

For more information on performing a hard reset, see Use Hard Reset to Resolve Hardware and Software Issues.

  • In some cases, updating the BIOS might help prevent this error from occurring. For more information on how to update the BIOS, see Updating the BIOS.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

Here are the lists of troubleshoot that I have done:

1. Update BIOS to latest version available as per product support page

2. Perform 'Windows reset' under Settings>Update & Security>Recovery>Reset this PC

3. Perform 'Windows Fresh Start' under Windows Security>Device performance & health>Fresh Start

4. Clean install Windows 10 through USB bootable media (latest Windows 10 from Microsoft)

5. Clean fans and heatsink

6. Replace thermal paste on both CPU and GPU

All of above did nothing to improve my newly bought (less than 2 weeks) Pavilion notebook when it comes to normal operating temperature. It still reach 90 degree Celsius just by browsing internet (Microsoft Edge/Chrome).

I am confuse and bit regret of buying another HP now. Please suggest any recommended action.

I appreciate your efforts to try and resolve the issue. I would suggest performing system factory reset will put the computer back to the original factory settings in this way all corrupted and outdated software will be removed.

While doing the recovery there is an option to backup your personal files. If you have not previously done one now is a good time.

Restoring Files that were Backed Up Using HP Recovery Manager (Windows )You can also contact HP support for assistance. They can remotely access your system to help alleviate difficulties: www.hp.com/contacthp/

The HP Cloud Recovery Tool allows you to download recovery software to a USB drive. You can use the downloaded recovery image file in order to install the Windows operating system.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

I have just tried that, initially the system running fine. But after around 10 minutes, the notebook temperature goes up again, acting like how it did prior to HP recovery.

Any other recommended action to be taken?
