Hi,

My Laptop model: HP Pavilion 14-b005ea.

The original HDD attached with my laptop giving problem so I have changed new HDD. I sent to Tech shop for the service.

They changed HDD and installed new OS Win 10 (previously Win 8). But now laptop becomes extremely slow. Previously boot time was only 5 seconds. But now takes ages. During HDD changing I saw SSD 2242 class slot but I am not sure about that.

Can anyone suggest me whether this laptop compatible with 2242 class SDD? and How can I boot my laptop in 5 sec like before.

Thanks.

Hi:

Chapter 1 of the service manual indicates the slot you found is for a 32 GB mSATA SSD that is used to accelerate the hard drive.

ManualsLib - Makes it easy to find manuals online!

Whether or not you can remove the 2.5" drive and use the mSATA slot for a bootable drive, that I do not know.

If you wanted to experiment with one, it wouldn't be too expensive.

As far as why the notebook isn't booting up as fast as it used to, unfortunately I would have no idea.

Did the shop install a 2.5" SSD, or a 2.5" mechanical hard drive?

Did they install all of the required drivers?  Chipset, etc.

HP has retired support for your notebook, so I don't know where they would find the drivers for it unless they were really good at cross-referencing HP notebooks that have similar hardware or found the drivers on a 3rd party website.

It could be anything.

The 2242 mSATA slot is for an acceleration cache drive that works in conjunction with the 2.5 inch drive in a kind of RAID array. Is there a disk in the slot? If the technician installed Windows 10 on the new hard drive he or she may not have enabled the cache acceleration, which does speed up boot time significantly. The accelerator function is achieved using something called Intel Rapid Storage Technology. Its an add-in driver you get at the Microsoft website. Been a few years since I did it but it used to be something we dealt with pretty regularly here on the Forum. The 2242 mSATA slot cannot be the primary boot disk if there is also a 2.5 inch drive installed. If you can find a large capacity 2242 mSSD then it can be used as the boot drive when it is the only drive in the system but these are older technology and no faster (actually a little slower) than just using a 2.5 inch SATA SSD in lieu of a mechanical hard drive. However, at $19 that 256 gig mSATA 2242 drive is an intriguing proposition and would be much faster than a mechanical drive.

Dear Paul,

Sorry for delayed reply.

Yes, I found its mSATA 32 GB SSD, and that is usable.

My shop installed mechanical 2.5'' HDD (1TB). But unfortunately he didn't install all drivers.

I tried to find all drivers but unable to find.

If you can help me to find all drivers then it'll be highly appreciated.

Dear Huffer,

Thanks for your reply.

I have 2.5'' mechanical HDD now and 32GB mSATA SSD installed. Previously I had Win 8.1 with 500GB mechanical 2.5'' HDD and 32GB. Due to HDD health issue, have to changed to 1TB 2.5'' mechanical HDD.

My tech installed win10 directly in HDD and kept SSD unused, which causes extremely slow. Its true he didnt do cache acceleration (still I dont know how to do it).

Today I installed win8.1 pro directly in 32GB mSATA SSD and erased previous windows from HDD.  This speeds up significantly. But I cant find all required drivers/softwares needed for this laptop.

Now Win 8.1 is in the 32GB SSD but suffering with low space in C drive.

If you can help me to do the acceleration cache drive please? Also if you can help me to find out all the drivers.

Dear all,

After installing Win 8, current drive management.

Please suggest if I need to do anything more to solve above mentioned problems

You're very welcome.

This reputable 3rd party website has the drivers you need for your notebook.

Unfortunately, I wouldn't be able to help you with installing Windows the right way on the hard drive and using the 32 GB mSATA drive as the cache.

You can probably find some information on the internet help.

I do know that you need to install the Intel rapid storage technology driver and software for this type of setup.

I would have gone for the 256 GB mSATA drive experiment.

It probably would have worked, since Windows installed and booted from the 32 GB drive.

You've already proved that.

There is no similar setting in the BIOS like the Dell SATA setting for "Intel Rapid Start". In HP the BIOS will just allow the 32 gig to combine with the mechanical hard drive and enable acceleration. You do not need to set the BIOS to AHCI, either. They can only be set that way on an HP.  You install the Intel Rapid Storage App, and this will give you this user interface to activate acceleration:
