HP pavilion

Hi,

I'm considering buying the HP Pavilion 14

HP Pavilion 14-ce0510sa 14" Intel® Core™ i5 Laptop - 256 GB SSD

Or the i7 version, in torn between the two however my main issue is can the Ram be upgraded, I looked through the manual but couldn't see anything that said so.

Can he SSD be upgraded too? It's more the Ram I'm interested in, my current laptop has 12gb ram (I upgraded this one) but it was simple to do, I'm worried that it will be tricky to upgrade if it all possible.

Yeah they all look similar inside although with dedicated graphics the coooling system would look a little different. The drives and memory would be the same. Right now there is no good place anywhere in the world to get the hard drive parts. Some users have done a workaround using cables and bracket devices from other models and modifying them to fit but I sense that is not something you will feel comfortable doing. Assume you will not be able to add a hard drive. Order the largest M.2 SSD your budget will permit and we can assist you moving the files you want to keep at hand off that old hard drive.

@Plummy89

  • Firstly i7 or i5: this is up to your choice
  • Secondly RAM: It has One SODIMM memory module slot, non-customer-accessible/non-upgradable, supports 16GB max. It is much better to buy a model/product which has max RAM now (ie 16GB) because upgrading RAM now is a painful task. We used to upgrade RAM in 1 min or 2 but now can take hours and risky too.
  • And for SSD: Machine comes with M.2 SATA or  PCIe, NVMe. You can upgrade to larger (capacity). Best option is to add HDD/SSD to its HDD bay/slot, don't have to touch its primary storage.

Regards.

Thank you for the reply, very helpful.

I agree it's probably best to buy a bigger RAM or I will just have to settle with the 8.

Am I right in tbinthin then that this laptop has a spare slot for an additional HDD/ssd ontop of the onboard one. I currently have a HDD with all.my files on and would be ideal if it could just slot in.

Thanks @banhein

Theoretically yes. Here is the Service Manual:

Manual

Start on p. 33 for removal of the rear cover and you see this:

M.2 slot in red; memory and HDD to the lower leftM.2 slot in red; memory and HDD to the lower left

The real problem is this statement:

The hard drive bracket is available using spare part number L19469-001. The hard drive cable
is available using spare part number L19172-001

You need the bracket and cable to "slot in" a hard drive and these parts have proven to be very elusive. The hard drive/SSD require the same level of disassembly as the memory so all of these steps are considered non-customer procedures but generally HP will not void the warranty if the work is done carefully without damage to the laptop.

Post back if you want more help and we can see if maybe the bracket and cable have become available and let us know where you live (country) as parts channels vary by location.

Thank you this is extremely helpful, just for my own clarification (I think I'm going for i7 one) is the SSD that it comes with inbuilt in the motherboard leaving a gap for an extra HDD to go (based on your picture above in the bottom left) assuming I can get my hands on the spare parts?

Or is it an SSD that needs to be fully replaced? If this is the case will it not have the bracket etc already holding it in place.

I'm resigned to the 8gb memory though.

Thanks in advance

Daniel

The SSD is removeable. Its the long thin thing circled in red. You could put a larger one in. It needs no bracket. Held in with one screw.

The memory is just to the left of that....the rectangular thing and that one memory module could be removed and replaced with a 16 gig module.

The hard drive is the bigger rectangular thing in the lower left. Yours will come  with this space blank meaning you need the bracket and cable to install a hard drive and connect it to the motherboard. Hope that makes sense.

Please accept as solution if this is the info you need.

Yes thanks that makes sense, this is a great help.

One final question, I live in the UK, where would the best place to get the spare parts needed for the additional HDD.

I'm pretty sure I'm going for HP Pavilion 14 - ce0505sa (i7) though I may get the i5 but the separatr graphics card makes he i7 more desirable.

If I opted for the i5 I assume the layout is the same in terms of extra hdd etc.

Thanks again
