I have a Pavilion 15, recently purchased so it is brand whenever I plug the charger while using the machine, the machine gets really hot(on left end) and fan gets real loud, its worse when I use docking station (HP USB-C Dock G5). Is this something I should be concerned about or is it just that laptop is new?

@INeedAHero1, Welcome to HP Support Community,
Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue
Check for Software Issues or Background Processes
- Task Manager: Open Task Manager (press Ctrl + Shift + Esc) and see if any applications or background processes are using too much CPU or memory, which can cause the laptop to heat up.
- Updates: Ensure that your operating system and drivers, especially graphics drivers and chipset drivers, are up to date. Sometimes, outdated drivers can cause thermal management issues.
Update BIOS and Drivers
- HP regularly releases updates for BIOS and thermal management. Visit the HP Support Website (enter your laptop's model) and check if there's a BIOS update or any drivers that could fix thermal issues.
- Sometimes docking stations and peripherals can cause heat buildup if there are compatibility issues that are addressed in an update.
Ensure Proper Ventilation
- Make sure the laptop's air vents are not blocked, especially when using the docking station. The left side of your Pavilion might have exhaust vents, so placing it on a soft surface like a bed or couch can block airflow.
- Use the laptop on a hard, flat surface, and try to elevate the back of the laptop slightly to help with airflow.
Check Power Settings
- In Power & Sleep Settings, make sure you're not using high-performance power plans unless necessary. In the battery settings, choose a balanced or power saver mode when not gaming or using demanding software.
- When plugged in, laptops often switch to higher performance modes that use more power and generate more heat, especially with docking stations.
Docking Station and USB-C Connection
- Docking Station Load: Using a docking station can cause additional heat due to the extra peripherals and power being used. Check if using the laptop without the docking station reduces the temperature and fan noise.
- Disconnect other devices (e.g., external monitors, storage devices) to reduce the load on the system when connected to the dock. Some docking stations can increase the load on the laptop's GPU and CPU.

Thermal Paste & Hardware Check
- Since your laptop is brand new, this is less likely, but in rare cases, thermal paste application at the factory can cause overheating.
- The left side might indicate the location of the CPU or GPU, where the heat might be concentrated.
Clean Air Vents
- Dust can accumulate quickly, even in new laptops. Check to see if the air vents have any obstructions. You can use compressed air to gently clean out the vents.
Monitor Temperature
- Use software to monitor your CPU and GPU temperatures. Temperatures over 85°C under load are concerning, and anything close to or above 90°C for extended periods could indicate thermal throttling or potential overheating issues.
I hope these steps help resolve the issue

Hi Garp_senchau,
Thank you for your response.
I checked all the suggest items, my laptop is solely used on a flat desk with ample space so ventilation is no issue, details from task manager are acceptable, memory is relatively low at times of no use (30%+-) as well as CPU (<10%). I checked HP website for drivers and there are no new drivers available for installation. Temp of CPU is about 50+- off charge.
The real issue is as soon as I plug charger, weather be it pin charger or from docking station then system heats up, CPU temps reaches 60+ and fan blows real high, once I disconnect charger then CPU temp drops to 50 again and fan slows this is the real issue I am having.
