HP Pavillion 15 ab 153nr
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello !

I have been trying use the AMD Radeon R6 driver and Andrenaline software on this unit and without fail, regardless of what application I am using - the system goes into what I call 'crazy mode' right before locking up. Of course nothing I try can bring it out of that state except to slam the ol' power button down to kill the process. As we all know, not a good idea on either the systems hardware or software. The unit is a HP 15 Pavilion ab 153nr which possess these features:

Radeon Software Version - 17.7
Radeon Software Edition - Crimson ReLive
Graphics Chipset - AMD Radeon(TM) R6 Graphics
Memory Size - 512 MB
Memory Type - DDR3
Core Clock - 720 MHz
Windows Version - Windows 10 (64 bit)
System Memory - 8 GB
CPU Type - AMD A10-8700P Radeon R6, 10 Compute Cores 4C+6G

Graphics Card Manufacturer - Powered by AMD
Graphics Chipset - AMD Radeon(TM) R6 Graphics
Device ID - 9874
Vendor ID - 1002
SubSystem ID - 80AF

SubSystem Vendor ID - 103C
Revision ID - C5
Bus Type - PCI
Current Bus Settings - PCI
BIOS Version - 015.048.000.061
BIOS Part Number - BR46326.001
BIOS Date - 2015/05/11 05:01
Memory Size - 512 MB
Memory Type - DDR3
Memory Clock - 800 MHz
Core Clock - 720 MHz
Total Memory Bandwidth - 12 GByte/s

and according to HP and AMD this software and driver are made for this system and should not present any issue but they are incorrect and it does. I bought this unit based in part in the graphics ad its only 2 years old yet due to all the issues with powering off as I have, I have had to do at least 5 fresh installs of the system and its really driving me batty as they say. I have ran the top malware hunters including Rogue Killer, I keep the system up to date in all applications and not I am forecd to reinstall the OEM grahics which I am not thrilled about this situation. I use a external hard drive for all my files and data and the 1TB is not even half way full. Any suggestions, direction or experince  would be most grateful and appreciated. Without everyones help I would think most of us wouldnt own computers anymore !

Thanks everyone for your time and assistance.

I will preface by saying this is not my area of expertise.  Apologies for any mistakes or miss-steps.

In general, most of the HP Drivers are dated in the 2015-2016 range -- not surprising because the system, as mentioned, is a couple of years old.

If you have not already done so, consider updating the BIOS.

HP Notebook System BIOS Update (AMD Processors)

Type:  BIOS

Version:  F.45 Rev.A

Operating Systems:  Windows 10 (64-bit)

Release date:  May 17, 2017

As you know, updating the BIOS always carries an element of risk.

The BIOS Update procedure is best done manually:

  • Update the BIOS only AFTER you have saved your most critical data somewhere (other than on the computer).
  • The BIOS update procedure should only be completed while AC power is supplied to the computer during the entire update process.
  • The computer must be quiescent (not busy / loaded)...
  • There should be a good reason to Update the BIOS -- for example, you are attempting to resolve a known problem and / or you have received a Critical Alert from HP that the BIOS should be updated.
