HP Pavilion shuts down randomly - all HP diagnostic tests successful, including extensive system check (looped till error). Failure happens even at bios screen, sometime within minutes and at times after 2 hours. Read all previous posts and tried the changes suggested (power settings/max cpu power etc) nothing seems working. Windows event viewer logs got nothing, even BIOS logs don't have any entries. All drivers and BIOS updated to latest version. Behaviour is same on battery as well as ac power. Once the laptop runs for longer (after repeated shutdowns) the system is more stable - goes for 1-2 hours, without a sudden shutdown.

Just how full to the maximum capacity is your hard disk or SSD?

SSD 256 GB, hardly 45GB full. I have isolated OS issues as the behaviour is same on BIOS screen. Shuts down 5-6 times in the first ten minutes of usage and then slowly gets better. The hardware extensive test ran for 7 iterations without errors (roughly two hours) before it shutdown.

"I have isolated OS issues as the behaviour is same on BIOS screen." That is a critical observation.
If the issue is also seen at the BIOS screen, that indicates that the issue is hardware or firmware (BIOS code) related, not the operating system.
I would consider failing memory module(s), dust causing temperature increases or system board component issues.
Have you used PC compressed canned air to clean possible dust obstructions from the air intake/exhaust port on the notebook?
If you use a compressor do not go over 5psi.
