HP Pavilion - 17-ab233ng

Bought new Ram https://www.alternate.de/html/product/1698050 for my HP Pavilion - 17-ab233ng but does not work. At least if I use just the new, either just one or both, only in combination  1 old, 1 new is working fine. Component check gets me the following error code: PLP85D-8KMBM1-MFPUQ1-40J903

I assume the memory controller does not regulate the speed properly, since the information page shows me a clock speed of 3200 but the CPU can just handle max 2400 (https://ark.intel.com/content/www/de/de/ark/products/97185/intel-core-i77700hq-processor-6m-cache-up...

Since I can not access the advanced settings in BIOS to change the speed manually pls provide me another solution!

BTW: restricting the settings is unbelievable bad product quality! Not offering any way to check the error code by myself is absolute anti customer service (regarding data security: the serial could be hidden there)! I feel like never HP again! (I know no one here is responsible for that or can change it  but I hope there is any way to make the decision maker aware of it)

Hi @2r3f34

When you purchase a factory made PC, whether it is laptop or desktop, BIOS settings being limited is the way it has always been done.

If you want to join us in DIY PC build world where we have lots of BIOS settings, including bus voltages, memory module voltages,  primary and secondary memory timings and more..

Manufacturers are protecting  the average PC and laptop owners from themselves.

If you don't know what you are doing and make a wrong voltage setting you can smoke check the system or mother board.

This is what the error message means

When upgrading memory it is best practice to replace the module with a pair of guaranteed compatible memory modules that are identical in all respects
Upgrading  memory in that manner works as expected the first time.

Many first time "upgraders" who mix memory brands, capacity and module formats, end up with the result that you did.

First of all thanks a lot for your time, effort and detailed response!

Restricting access without any possibility to unlock it feels for me just as paternalism and as a great trick to sell higher priced "professional" products 😉

So the "Diagnostic report" says there is something wrong with the RAM. Great I knew that before 😂 Is there any way to get some more information about what's wrong?
Actually RAM with just a higher possible frequency should be no problem, all other parameter seem fine to me. And currently my system runs on mixed RAMs (one old and one new) and it just works fine!

Where can I find a list of guaranteed compatible memory modules? In fact I don't want them to be identical in all respects 😉

Thanks in advance and have a great day

You're welcome.

"Actually RAM with just a higher possible frequency should be no problem"

So, here's the thing, in a fantasy world I would like that.

In reality? Ah, if upgrading only worked  in such a simple fashion. It does not, as you have discovered.

You have to look at the chipset memory max bandwidth and the Processor max memory bandwidth accepted as well. Then you have the BIOS ROM coding which is the final Yay or Nay as to whether a module will work or not.

So in a fantasy world I would like that.

Here it is some guaranteed compatible memory modules and SSD options. These have been tested.
