HP Pavilion 17-e146us
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I currently have this laptop which has the i3-4000m processor installed. The TDP of the processor is 37w which means that the best possible CPU for the laptop is either the i7-4702mq or the i7-4712mq. The problem with choosing one of these processors is the chance it might not work if they aren't supported by the BIOS. I have looked online and many, many people have done this upgrade and about 50% have succeded in their attempt. My assumption as to why the rest did not succed in the upgrade was from insufficient BIOS support and I expect these systems only support three CPUs [i3-4000m, i5-4200m, and the i7-4600m]. Not only am I planing on upgrading the CPU but I also have an extra SSD I'm currently not using and about 100 sticks of DDR3 ram in a box in the garage. Planning to go up to 16gb if possible but I am unable to find a list of supported ram modules for this laptop either. If anyone has a list of supported CPUs and ram that would be greatly appreciated. If anyone has done this upgrade in the past with success if you could please let me know what processor you selected and why that would also be appreciated.

Here's a Speccy snapshot of the computer:

Your machine currently has  6GB DDR3L SDRAM (2 DIMM) that means 1 slot has 4GB and 1 slot has 2GB. You can upgrade to 16GB using the following compatible RAM (guaranteed by Crucial):

      https://www.crucial.com/usa/en/compatible-upgrade-for/HP---Compaq/pavilion-17-e146us

For CPU, please see the list on page 2 of the following manual

You need right part on page 85 and latest BIOS on the following link
