I am having this problem with my laptop when dealing with my new external SSD. I would greatly appreciate any assistance.
Problem: Windows File Explorer freezes when trying to access an external SSD connected to the USB 3 or USB-C port.
I have tried:
- Uninstalling and reinstalling USB drivers, and ensuring no pending updates on HP Support Assistant
- Result: no changes
- Connecting the SSD to another computer
- Result: SSD works like a charm running at full USB 3 speeds. SSD is not defective.
- Connecting the SSD to my laptop on USB 2 ports or by using a USB 2 rated USB Type-A to Type-C adapter on the USB USB Type-C port
- Result: Problem disappears, but SSD only runs at USB 2 speeds
- Connecting an external USB 3 Hard Drive to the USB 3 port or to the USB Type-C port using a USB 3 rated USB Type-A to Type-C adapter.
- Result: File Explorer does not hang, and file transfers run at USB 3 speeds.
The problem seems to only appear when using the USB 3 protocol using an external SSD.

I suggest going to the SSD manufacturers website to see if they have a new firmware for the device.
Try a different brand or model of SSD to see if the same problems exist.
