Hi @Boelke,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your HP Pavilion's hard drive has burnt out, it's important to address the issue safely and find a suitable replacement. Here's a step-by-step guide on how you can proceed.
Immediate Actions:
- Unplug and Power Down: If you haven’t done so already, immediately unplug the laptop from the power source and allow it to cool down.
- Do Not Attempt to Power Back On: Avoid turning the laptop back on until the hard drive is replaced to prevent further damage.
Data Recovery Considerations:
- If you have important data on the drive, you might want to consult a professional data recovery service before replacing the drive, as further attempts to access the drive might damage the data further.
Find a Compatible Replacement:
- Specifications: Refer to your laptop's original specifications to ensure compatibility with the new hard drive. You will need a 2.5-inch SATA hard drive or SSD for HP Pavilion models.
- Purchase Options: You can purchase a replacement drive from online retailers, electronics stores, or directly from HP's parts store.
Self-Installation:
- If you are comfortable installing the new hard drive yourself, follow these steps:
- Power down and unplug your laptop.
- Locate the hard drive compartment (usually accessible by removing a panel on the bottom of the laptop).
- Remove the screws securing the existing hard drive, disconnect it, and remove it from the bay.
- Place the new hard drive in the bay, secure it with screws, and reconnect any connectors.
- Replace the panel and screws.
Reinstallation of Operating System:
- After replacing the drive, you’ll need to reinstall the operating system. This can be done using recovery media that you’ve created prior to the hard drive failure or obtained from HP.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
