HP Pavilion Laptop 15-eh1021la
Microsoft Windows 11

I have an HP Pavilion Laptop 15-eh1021la, the problem is that it only charges the battery when it is off, when it is on and has the AC connector, the battery charge indicator is flashing, but it does not charge anything, only when it is off the battery lasts between 3 to 5 hours depending on use, I have already run all the tools and diagnostics, they all say that everything is OK, I also changed the AC charger, and the charging port, and the error remains.

Any idea what I can do?

Hi @RamonMMendoza,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you've already tried several troubleshooting steps, which is great. Since the battery only charges when the laptop is turned off, this could be related to power management settings, a battery or BIOS issue, or a hardware malfunction. Here are a few steps to try:

Reset Power Management Settings:

  • Open Device Manager, expand Batteries, right-click on Microsoft AC Adapter and Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery, and choose Uninstall device for both.
  • After uninstalling, restart your laptop. Windows should automatically reinstall the drivers.
  • Check if the battery charges when powered on.

Update the BIOS:

  • Check if there’s a BIOS update available on the HP support website for your specific model. Sometimes, BIOS updates resolve power management issues.
  • Follow the instructions carefully to update your BIOS.

Calibrate the Battery:

  • Fully discharge the battery until it reaches 0%, and the laptop shuts off. Then, charge it fully to 100% without interruptions while it’s turned off.
  • Once fully charged, check if the laptop can charge the battery while it’s powered on.

Run HP Hardware Diagnostics: HP PCs - Testing for hardware failures

  • Since you’ve already run some diagnostics, ensure you also ran the Battery Test within the HP Hardware Diagnostics (accessible by pressing F2 during startup). This can sometimes give specific details about battery health beyond standard tools.

Power Adapter and Motherboard Check:

  • Since the charging port has been replaced, the motherboard charging circuitry may need inspection.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
