HP Pavilion Power 15-cb077nr
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello, yesterday the USB-C port in my HP Pavilion laptop stopped to work. My model is HP Pavilion Power 15-cb077nr and my laptop is out of warranty (I bought it 3 years ago). I ran the UEFI hardware check and found that the port is indeed faulty:

USB Port Check : FAILED

FAILURE ID : M4JA1H-905AA4-MFPUQK-8D6U03
PRODUCT ID : 2HT43UA#ABA

Is anyone here familiar with this type of failure? Is this something that is repairable?

Many thanks,

Gilberto

failure code.png

Device: Communications. Includes: GPS, HUB, Modem, Network Card, Network Drive, PCI Card, PCMCIA, Switch, USB. Error Message: USB Failure (unspecified) Since USB ports are part of Motherboard, they cannot be changed individually

That is bad news. It appears to be a system board problem.

When you say that the port is part of the system board, does it mean that it is not replaceable through repair?

Yes. That would require a system board replacement.  I would source a suitable notebook replacement. replacing a system board also means acquiring a new Windows license activation key as well.

Unfortunately that port is part of the system board.

The failure ID that you provided failed its checksum test.

I suggest that you run the test again and see if it provides a different failure ID tag.

Post it here in your thread.

Hi Erico, thank you so much for your reply. I believe I had a typo in the ID, the correct value should be: M4JA1H-905AA4-MFPUQK-8D6U03 (I've also updated the original question).

When you say that the port is part of the system board, does it mean that it is not replaceable through repair?

Many thanks once again.

Hi Erico, thanks for the reply and for the diagnosis.

It's so frustrating that a small failure such as a single USB port would require a full motherboard replacement. Unfortunately my laptop is 3 years old and is out of warranty, so replacing it is not an option right now.

But other than the USB-C port itself, everything looks and behaves normally with the laptop. Do you know if this type of failure is a sign of something critical with my motherboard or whether I will likely be able to live with it, albeit with one less port?

Many, many thanks,

Gilberto

You're welcome. I do wish I had better news to give you than what I did.

I would keep on using it, but backing up any data, photos and videos to an external storage device on a regular basis. The notebook is no longer safe to keep any critical information on. It is time to consider sourcing a replacement.

When the ports start failing it a a sign that some traces or even some solder points on the board may ne soon to follow.

Thanks again for the reply, Erico. I make backups on a daily basis and I decided to start looking for a replacement soon. I'm really grateful for all your feedback.
