I got my laptop August 2017. Recently it has been shutting down without warning. When I plug it in and turn it back on the battery says 0% even though the battery was at around 40% when the pc shut down. There is no warning for low battery and the pc charges normally back to 100% afterwards. Tabs and apps remain open when it shuts down like this. I'm not sure what exactly is wrong or how to fix it. I find it unusual to have a battery problem only a year after getting the laptop new.

Thank you for choosing the HP Support Forums, a community energized by solutions, as we are eager to help resolve your concerns,
I am Riddle_Decipher and I'm at your service (Like a Genie, however, without magic powers) 😉
Have you performed a test on the battery to identify the issue?
When was the last time it worked without these issues? have you attempted a system restore?
While you respond to that, here's what you need to do: Click here for steps to test and calibrate the battery
If the issue persists, reinstall the battery drivers by pressing Windows + X and selecting the device manager > Uninstall the Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery under batteries and restart the computer for it would automatically reinstall the correct version and the same should resolve the issue.
If that doesn't work, Click here to improve the battery performance.
Keep me posted, as I (Or a trusted colleague) shall follow-up on this case to ensure the concern has been addressed,
And your device is up and running again, only in case you don't get back to us, first!
That said, If the information I've provided was helpful, give us some reinforcement by clicking the solution and kudos buttons,
That'll help us, and others see that we've got the answers!
Good Luck.

Hello @Riddle_Decipher
Thank you for responding. I have not attempted a system restore and this issue has been going on for at few months but I don't know exactly when it started.
I followed your instructions to run a battery test.
The HP Hardware Diagnostics battery test result kept saying "Canceled". I'm unsure why but the test log is still available. One of the lines reads " Primary_TestresultString: WEAK ".
HP Support Assistant battery test came back as "Weak". Attached is the results.
What would my next steps be and how do I know if battery replacement is under warranty? I'll also look over the other link you included about improving battery life.
Thank you
Sincerely
Dancon

Thank you for replying with this detailed response,
I appreciate your time and efforts,
You could get the battery replaced via the HP Parts Store, once you've confirmed the part number of your device at the HP Parts Surfer,
Alternatively, you may also use the universal part number obtained from the Parts Surfer to order the same via any local online store such as Amazon or eBay,
That said, you could refer to my private message for details on getting the same replaced via HP as well:
Please check your Private message icon on the upper right corner of your HP Forums profile, using the blue envelope:

I hope your day gets better, good luck.

I had the same issue with the battery and after running the test the software recommended that it needs the battery to replace. But, I figured battery settings and found which apps are affecting my battery. I found that some applications like google chrome is managed by windows and was using 49% of battery. I switched it to Managed by user and the battery is working absolutely fine now.
