My laptop froze and I was unable to do anything so I forced shutdown on it, I rebooted it and I noticed I was on the boot screen for a long period of time (about 10 min). I ran the System Quick test in the UEFI BIOS and everything passed except "Hard Drive Short DST Check: FAILED". If someone can provide help. It'd be appreciated.

Hi,
The drive on the link below is an example of one that would be fine for your notebook.
The procedure to replace the Hard Drive starts on Page 52 of your Maintenance & Service Guide.
If you have created your set of Recovery Discs, these will reinstall Windows 8 on the new drive.
If you wish to install Windows 7, change the following bios settings prior to installation.
Tap away at the esc key as soon as you press the power button to launch the Start-up Menu. Select f10 to enter the bios menu.
Select the System Configuration tab, expand Boot Options then set Secure Boot to Disabled and Legacy Devices to Enabled ( if applicable ). Press f10 and select to Save these settings - on reboot, you'll be prompted to enter a 4 digit pin displayed on the screen; do this and hit enter.

Hi,
The 24 character error code for the short Disk Self Test ( DST ) would indicate that the Hard Drive is failing and needs to be replaced. This is also consistent with the 'freezing' and boot issues you describe.
If your notebook is still under warranty, contact HP ( with the 24 character error code ) and arrange to have the drive replaced - you can check your warranty status Here.
If you live in the US, contact HP Here.
If you are in another part of the world, start Here.
If you are out of warranty and would like a guide on replacing the Hard Drive yourself, please let me know.
Regards,
DP-K

Hi, I'm having the exact same issue, but want to go to windows 8.1 from windows 7.
I managed to follow the same steps up until the point I went into system configuration, and then boot options, but the options for secure boot and legacy devices aren't there.
Help would be greatly appreciated. - J
