Hello,

Talk about ancient hardware!  A family member has an old HP Pavilion G7-2275DX and the fan bearing is just starting to go out finally. The service P/N on both the original fan that's limping along, and a new replacement from eBay are both 683193-001. There is a difference in a part number at the bottom of the fan, that's why there are two pictures attached. Evidently, the more modern fan will not mate correctly to the header on the motherboard: the plug is too wide, either long way or short way, or both. The plugs look very very similar, both 4 wires for PWM, but there are some subtle differences between the two which leads me to think that the newer one has slightly more plastic than the older one. For instance, the rim where the wires go in has two very small notches in it on the original, but the replacement does not have those notches cut into the rim.

Anyway, before I waste more money and a few more disassembled on this ancient machine, I'm just looking for advice that not only should the Service P/N be the same, but some portion of the part number where the bar code is on the bottom of the fan should be similar as well, no?

The original has, where the barcodes are, written "DTA49R33TP003AHD431".

The new replacement has written, "FCN49R33TP303AAD123".

I've found a couple heatsinks on eBay with their fans and the barcodes number is the same up until the last 4 or 5 alphanumerics.  I don't need a heatsink, the old one is working just fine with some PTM7950.  My relative gets annoyed at the BIOS error every time the laptop boots, and the whining noise the old fan is making.

Anyone have some advice?

Thanks in advance!

According to partsurfer.hp.com, the p/n for fan is  680551-001 I would Google search for that one

Ok, thanks for the reply!  That p/n yields a lot of fans with the original part number that is on the fan I pulled from the laptop. I'm going to end up going with a pulled heat pipe and fan unit. Hopefully the bearings last =\
