I purchased an HP Pavillion Laptop 18 months ago and on March 31, 2018 it just completely stopped working. I took it to Micro Center where I purchased it to have it checked out and they have told me that it needs a new mother board and that will cost $800. I purchased it on 9/26/2018 for $900. I asked why the mother board stopped working and they said that they cannot detect anything. Shouldn't the HP laptop last longer than 18 months? Please let me know how to proceed.

Sorry, but the HP warranty is only for 12 months, so if it fails after that, the cost of repairs and replacement is born by the purchaser, not HP.
HP does not sell its motherboards, and the companies that make those under contract to HP do not sell them, either.
If you use this link, you can get the HP part number of the system board: http://partsurfer.hp.com/Search.aspx?SearchText=E0J90UA
But you would have to then do an online search for that part, and anywhere you find it, that will be USED -- and it's very likely that it will not work properly, if at all. So, wherever you buy it from, be sure to get a refund guarantee.

The warranty how long HP will agree to fix issues with their product FOR FREE. Every manufacturer provide a warranty that is limited in duration, HP is no different.
As to HOW LONG you can expect it to work? I have a 10-year old HP DV6 laptop that is STILL working fine to this day. Admittedly, I have had to replace the HDD with an SDD and the keyboard (once, 5 years ago), but it is still chugging along -- and I use it each and every day.
I also have a 15-year old HP laptop that still works, but since it has a really old single-core processor and can't be upgraded beyond Win7, and Win 7 is no longer supported by Microsoft, I do not use it anymore. But I could.
I believe the older laptops were built to be more rugged and last longer, as a result. When the DV6 dies, I will look into getting a 3-4 year old refurbished laptop, as I believe these older ones survive longer than the newer ones.
