HP Pavillon Laptop 15-eg0070wm.  From day one, the battery life was short much less than specified and the battery drains when it is off.  I've checked for programs running and had HP do a diagnostics.  They said it was functioning properly.  It is not! I ran into a wall with HP as far as resolving this problem.  I did purchase the extended warranty, but because I addressed the problem as soon as I got the unit, but the insurance company said the unit was defective and won't cover it.  It is all very frustrating.  Both companies just passed it off, and I'm stuck with a unit that is now out of warranty and not functioning properly. Is this a common problem?  Any suggestions?  Any help is greatly  appreciated. We've had good luck with HP in the past, but I'd be hesitant to buy another after this experience.  Thank you!

Hi @0752RBV,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your HP Pavilion Laptop 15-eg0070wm has had poor battery life from day one and the battery continues to drain even when the laptop is shut down. Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this and what options you still have.

Check for modern standby (sleep drain vs true shutdown)
Some Pavilion models use Modern Standby, which can cause battery drain even when the system appears off.
Shut the laptop down using Shut down (not Sleep or Hibernate) and confirm the power light is completely off.

Disable Fast Startup
Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do and turn off Fast Startup.
Fast Startup keeps parts of the system powered and is a common cause of battery drain while “off.”

Update BIOS and chipset drivers
Check the HP support page for your exact model and install the latest BIOS and chipset drivers.
Early BIOS versions on some Pavilion models had power-management issues affecting battery life.

Check battery health manually
In Windows, generate a battery report to review design capacity vs current full charge capacity.
If the full charge capacity is significantly lower than design capacity, the battery has degraded prematurely.

Review background power usage
Open Settings > System > Power & battery > Battery usage.
Look for apps or services using power in the background, especially during “screen off” periods.

Adjust power and performance settings
Set the power mode to Best power efficiency when on battery.
Disable keyboard backlight, reduce screen brightness, and turn off Bluetooth when not needed.

Check for external wake sources
Disconnect all USB devices when the laptop is shut down.
Some USB devices can keep the system partially awake and slowly drain the battery.

Test battery drain while powered off
Charge the laptop to 100%, shut it down completely, and leave it unplugged for 8–12 hours.
Losing more than a few percent overnight strongly indicates a battery or power-management fault.

I hope this helps.
