Hey everyone!
I've been dealing with a frustrating charging issue on my HP ProBook 430 G8 for several months, and I'm hoping someone here might help me identify the cause before I take it to a repair shop.
The weird thing is that the problem is intermittent. Sometimes everything works perfectly, while other times the laptop refuses to charge, and restarting doesn't always fix it.
Laptop specifications
Model: HP ProBook 430 G8
CPU: Intel Core i7-1165G7 (11th Gen)
RAM: 16 GB DDR4
Storage: 512 GB SSD
Operating system: Windows 11 Pro, 64-bit (version 26H2)
The problem
Normally, when I connect the charger, my laptop charges without any problems. However, occasionally, it fails to recognize the charger or charge the battery properly.
Here's what I've observed:
Sometimes it charges normally. I turn on the laptop, connect the charger, and everything works as expected.
Sometimes it doesn't charge when I turn it on. The charger is connected, but the laptop doesn't appear to charge.
Restarting sometimes fixes the problem. On some occasions, restarting the laptop makes charging work again. On other occasions, even restarting doesn't help.
The charging LED behaves strangely. When I connect the charger and it isn't charging, the charging indicator blinks several times and then turns off instead of remaining illuminated.
Turning the laptop on has previously made charging work. When I first noticed this issue, it seemed to occur specifically while the laptop was powered off. The battery would start charging when I turned the laptop on. This was the original pattern, although the issue has become less predictable over time.
The problem seemed to disappear for months, but it has returned occasionally. Sometimes it happens more frequently than others, and I haven't identified a consistent pattern or trigger.
The most frustrating part is that I can't reliably reproduce the problem. It feels almost random.
I've tried restarting the laptop when charging fails, but the results are inconsistent.
During earlier troubleshooting, possible steps discussed included performing a hard reset by disconnecting the charger and holding the power button for approximately 15–20 seconds, checking BIOS/firmware updates, and investigating Windows power settings and the charger, charging port, and battery.
However, I haven't established whether any of these would permanently resolve the issue, and I don't want to assume the cause without further evidence.
I'd appreciate any insight from people familiar with HP laptops or laptop power-delivery systems.
In particular:
Could this be a faulty AC adapter, charging cable, or DC-in charging port?
Could the battery, its connector, or the motherboard's charging circuitry be responsible?
Is it possible that a BIOS/firmware issue or Windows power-management behavior is involved?
Is there a reliable way to distinguish a software problem from a hardware fault without opening the laptop?
Are there any specific HP diagnostics, BIOS settings, or tests I should check before taking it to a repair shop?
I'm trying to avoid replacing parts unnecessarily or paying for a repair without first narrowing down the cause.
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help!

Hi @Yacine205, thanks for posting. Sorry to hear about the battery issue with your ProBook 430 G8.
Since the problem is intermittent, the charger, its cable/tip or the charging port are the most likely causes, so test those first.
Slow charging, fast drain or "not charging" is usually caused by the charger, a BIOS setting, outdated firmware or a worn battery.
1. Check the charger and port first
- Inspect the cable and the connector tip for damage; if you have a multimeter or USB-C meter, check the output.
- Check the laptop's charging port for looseness or burn marks.
2. If it powers on
- Run HP Battery Check (HP Support Assistant) or the UEFI diagnostics (Esc > F2 > Component Tests > Battery).
- In BIOS (Esc > F10), check whether Battery Health Manager / Adaptive Battery Optimizer is limiting the charge to about 80%.
- Calibrate the battery: charge to 100%, use it until it shuts off, then charge to 100% without interruption.
