Gonna post the issue and the solution since I've seen a lot of posts on it.
My ProBook 450 G1 is old and I finally broke down and upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10
All went well except the built-in SD card reader in the front of the laptop wasn't detected at all.
WHAT DIDN'T WORK: Uninstalled/reinstalled the IDE ATA/ATAPI device in Device Manager...no change
Checked the BIOS to see if the media device was disabled...no change
WHAT DID WORK: In Device Manager an entry for an unidentified PCI device had a yellow "!" so I tried uninstalling/reinstalling it with no success. Also tried to update the driver by way of Windows Update and also no success. In the Device Manager>IDE ATA/ATAPI devices>Properties was an obscure mention of a PCI controller. So I went to the HP website and located all drivers and found that the built-in media card reader is a Realtek PCI device. I was able to update the diver and now he reader works fine.
