Ah that now makes sense Paul. Not done a cloning operation in a while so I couldn't recall the steps fully.

So; basically - insert the new blank drive inside the NVMe enclosure. Connect it to the laptop. Run the cloning software to clone the drive that I want to clone.

Then put the new drive into the laptop and boot and carry on like before.

Thank you again. You're a lifesaver Paul. 🙂

Will report back once I've purchased the new drive and done the cloning. 🙂

Hi, Mandeep:

That is exactly what you need to do.

Cheers,

Thank you Paul. 🙂

NVMe enclosure purchased from the Amazon link you've given on the post. Looking for a 2TB NVMe drive now. 🙂

Will report back soon. 🙂

You're very welcome, Mandeep.

Looking forward to reading about the results of your notebook's SSD upgrade project.

Hi Paul.

Good afternoon. I cloned the drive (as per your instructions) on this post using Macrium Reflect. I asked the program to "fill the new drive" to the full 2TB capacity so that the operating system is copied over but the rest of the drive is empty.

This means 140TB of the OS and the rest of the new drive is empty.

But I don't know what has gone wrong. I booted the laptop and I also set it to boot from the new 2TB SSD in the BIOS.

I booted from the new SSD and I now get a message -

BootDevice not found

Please install an operating system on your hard disk.

Hard Disk - (3F0)

F2 system diagnostics

I'm perplexed as to why it hasn't worked. Did the recovery partition and the reserved partitions also have to be copied over?

I only copied the OS partition (C drive) over and asked it to to extend that partition to the full 2TB drive.

Is this incorrect? Please let me know so that I can do this correctly. Thank you in advance. Mandeep

Hi Paul. I put the old SSD in and the laptop booted immediately. Thanks. Mandeep

Hi:

I don't know what you can do about the problem other than to use the HP cloud recovery client and reinstall Windows on the new drive by making a bootable USB recovery drive with the software.

Here is an info link for how to use the utility.  Pay particular attention for how to reinstall the drivers after Windows is installed.

You can download the software from the link below:

Hi Paul,

Let me see how it goes with this software you recommended. I have put the new SSD back into the enclosure and I am going to try the cloning operation again with all the recovery and reserved partitions included in the clone operation this time. Maybe it makes a difference. Let's see.

I will report back later on today or tomorrow depending on how things pan out. I don't want to reinstall Windows again from scratch using HP cloud software as there is specific data on the SSD I am cloning from that I need to keep.

Fingers crossed this works. Thank you again. Mandeep

You're very welcome, Mandeep.

Yes, I believe that you have to clone the entire drive's contents (all partitions, etc.).

You have to do the math to figure out how many GB the primary OS partition needs to be when you add in all of the other partitions so you get the full 2 TB of the drive filled.

Hi Paul.

All done! The trick is to remember that the cloning software operation needs to have all the partitions copied over (main OS one), the recovery one and the system reserved one.

I'm so happy to report back and tell you that after putting the new SSD back in the enclosure, I re-did the clone operation all over again.

But this time; I also selected all of the recovery and reserved partitions to be copied over in the cloning.

20 minutes later - lo and behold, I put the new SSD back into the laptop.

It booted into Windows without any issues whatsoever.

Thank you so so much for all your help and guidance.

Much, much appreciated. Mandeep
