I have a brand new laptop Probook 455 G9 with Ryzen R5-5625U. It surprised me that the CPU temperature is quite high under heavy load. Using Visual Studio Code, Docker, some browser tabs, Teams etc. the temp is between 50-75 C under mid-load, cca 40-45 C when idle. When there is some heavy load (building Docker images etc.) the temp rises even above 90 C - that is quite close to the max CPU temp design which is 95 C.

 

This squeezing to the max might be designed and wanted but I prefer much lower temperatures - I don´t think the CPU will not stand this but I am afraid of other electronic parts on the motherboard (junctions, brigdes, memory, whatever). The fan is also not so wild, the chassis not so hot and so.

 

The solution I have made is using open-source Ryzen Controller software. In there I have set up a maximum temperature to 75 C. If the load should push the temp higher it will lower the CPU frequency so it will stay at 75 C max.

 

Why 75 C exactly? I was playing with OCCT CPU benchmark that utilizes all 6 cores all 6 threads and watching the performance. The max temp I have allowed was 90 C. At 75 C I noticed almost no performance drop but at 70 or 65 C the drop is more significant. But yes, OCCT uses these two types if instructions only. Using other algorhitms the performance drop could be bigger but I don´t care.

 

AVX/SSE-1 is single core, single thread, AVX/SSE-12 is 6 cores, 12 threads.
