HP ProBook 650 G5 Notebook PC

The HP manual for my HP Probook 650 G5 indicates the maximum Hard Disk Drive (HDD) size is 1TB.  If I install a 2TB HDD in it (that's the largest available 2.5" drive available that will physically fit in this laptop) will the BIOS recognize the full 2TB?  The BIOS has been updated to the latest version.

Thank you for any guidance.  - Al

Hi, Al:

Since your notebook has a UEFI BIOS and if you install Windows in UEFI mode where the drive will be formatted with the GPT partition table, the maximum usable space of a 2 TB HDD will be seen and used by Windows.

As you may know the usable space of a hard drive is always less than what it is advertised at.

2 TB = approximately 1.86 TB net usable space.

You install Windows in UEFI mode by booting the installation media from the UEFI USB boot source, not the legacy one.

Hi Paul,

I was guessing that a 2TB HDD should work in this laptop and that HP simply didn’t offer it as an option at the time of this laptop’s release in 2019.  This laptop’s Windows operating system is installed on its 128GB SSD card and that’s really fast so that will stay there.  This internal 2TB HDD will be for storing my movies and music so I don’t have to haul around my 2TB USB HDD storage with me anymore.

Thanks for sharing all the helpful technical info and for taking the time to respond.  - Al
