Wow,
I installed TrueAPI.dll as you suggested and now Simplepass 5.3 loads. It remembers my fingerprints (where in the world would these have been stored, I deleted Simplepass over and over...).
We are not done yet, Simplepass does not import my stored identity (...tsd) although it accepts the password sentence I enter (it rejects a fake, wrong sentence). Well, that is to say, the process seems to go OK and Simplepass confirms "your identity was restored..." but no icons of my websites become visible.
Second issue, Simplepass does not pop up in IE or Firefox when I manually log in on a website, offering to store the logon. IE does shows "Authentec True Website logon" as a "switched on" plugin but its options are greyed out. I can not switch it off or on. Firefox doesn't mention it at all.
Third: When I click one of the default logos in Simplepass, nothing happens though this should start my default browser and log on to the website corresponding to the clicked logo.
My hope is vested in you now you managed to have me get Simplepass to the next stage...
Let's go for it!

Hello BenMcDui,
Thank you for your faith in me, I have to admit this is a team effort and a fun challenge. Again I will point you to a post that Dragon-Fur posted regarding Simplepass and websites. Please click here for more information I am in the meantime working on finding you more detail.

Dear Chrizzy,
your ongoing support is most appreciated. The link you provided lately has not revealed new things I fear.
I am starting to get afraid that a restore is inevitable, but I will give it some days more...
Thanks!

Hello Chrizzy,
I found the following "True" dlls:
TrueAPIdapter.dll
TrueAPIPrivateAdapter.dll
TrueAPI.dll
TrueOTPEikon.dll
TrueOTPIntel
TrueOTPValidity
in both
c:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Authentec
and
c:\Program Files\Common Files\Authentec
They were having the same date but different sizes!
I copied the three dlls from c:\Program Files\Common Files\Authentec (32 bit, hence) as your instruction was to verify if they were in c:\windows > system32. Then I rebooted
I noticed that I can now start webpages from within Simplepass; my standard browser Firefox starts automatically and the requested webpage opens. I must admit however that I hadn't tried this for a while and it is uncertain at which phase of our process this function got restored..
It is not possible to import a profile form a tsd-file.
Simplepass does not offer to store a login when I manually log in in IE10 or Firefox.
Best regards,
BenMcDui

Hi Ben
Chrizzy asked me to jump in to see if there is anything I can do to help. I have to say up front that the TrueAPI issue is one or the more toublesome and I think Chrizzy has done a wonderful job guiding you through the morass. I do not know I would do as well, given the circumstances.
I will reread the postings in this Thread and see if I think I can contribute.
If you would like to tell me:
- Which exact version of HP SimplePass are you running at this time? You can check the Properties on the Splash.exe file (located in C:\Program Files (x86)\HP SimplePass)
- What is the Hardware ID of your Valdity Sensor device?
How to find Hardware IDs > When Skydrive opens, look for and open the file named:
Driver Hardware Ids of Biometric Device

Thank you Dragon-Fur for joining.
The properties of Splash.exe tell me it is version 5.3.0.273. The Splash screen, during startup, says 5.3.
The Hardware IDs are:
USB\VID_138A&PID_0018&REV_0078
USB\VID_138A&PID_0018
So far, the Validity Sensor works in a sense that I use it to log in to my computer, to unlock Simplepass and to authorise certain actions in Simplepass.
Hope this helps!
Ben

Ben,
After looking around on my own system (Windows 8 Pro), and searching what I can about the files supported in SimplePass, Validity, and AuthenTec structures, I am convinced that your repeated installations of the SimplePass program are not clearing (at least) some of the previous structure.
Having installed the latest SimplePass software, you should be seeing and running HP SimplePass V6.0.100.276 and NOT the old version 5.3 that you are seeing. Simply said, the upgrade / install is not working.
The suggested procedure is meant to help clear out any extra bits that may be confusing the installation. There are a number of steps to complete in order; read it over a couple of times before you do anything.
==========================================================================================
Preparation
For this next part, I urge you to have your backups in order. Nothing offered here should have a negative impact on your system, nor should the propsed actions harm your personal files. It is common sense to have a means to get back to where you are in case things go sideways. Backups should include everything you need to reinstall your system.
Secondly, please make sure you create a Restore Point before you make any changes to the programs.
==========================================================================================
Have downloaded and available (saved) the following Validity Drivers. Do not install anything yet.
Your Current Validity Driver:
sp54999 Validity Sensor V4.3.205.0
An Update for the Validity Driver:
sp56403 Validity Sensor V 4.3.301.0
NOTE about the extra Driver (sp56403):
I think that you will be able to use sp54999 for your Validity Driver -- the version is older, but it is supported in Windows 7 and, as far as I remember, the 205 driver is supported by the latest HP SimplePass. IF, IF you have problems later, then you can try updating the driver to the later version shown above.
The latest HP SimplePass (at this writing):
sp63224 HP SimplePass V6.0.100.276 Win7-8
==========================================================================================
- Close all extra programs (email, Facebook, games, etc.)
- Create your Restore Point
- Remove the current Driver and Delete
- Windows key + X > M (Opens Device Manager) > BIOMETRICS > Right-Click on your validity sensor driver >
- Properties > Uninstall > in the prompt to remove the current driver >> tick the box to allow the removal >
- Proceed with the uninstall process
- Remove any existing HP SimplePass software
Control Panel > icon view > Programs and Features >
Highlight the program name HP SimplePass and then Right-Click on the name > Uninstall
- Restart / Reboot the computer and log in using your typed Windows Password
- Check for and remove any left over HP SimplePass "bits"
Search for and remove any remaining folders / files that contain HP Simplepass. Note that the folders should already have been removed -- this is cleanup in case the system missed something.
- Open a Windows Explorer Window
- Navigate to the following path: C:\Program Files (x86)\
- If you find a folder named HP SimplePass , then Right-Click on the name and Delete
- Open a new Windows Explorer Window
- Navigate to the following path: C:\Windows\Installer
- Search for "simplepass" (no quotes)
- If the search produces a result, and if the result shows a folder name in the form of numbers and characters inside brackets, then Delete that folder.
Example of the folder type to Delete - Remember: your numbers and characters may be different):
C:\Windows\Installer\{4BACA3B8-F63A-44ED-9A8D-48B4D02AD268}
- When the uninstall is complete, shut down the system to prevent the kernel from hibernating:
Complete Shutdown
- Windows key > type anywhere on the Start Screen: command prompt >
- RIGHT-CLICK on the Command Prompt box that shows up on the left side of the screen >
- From the bottom ribbon, select "Run as Administrator" > Opens the command line >
- If the User Account Control asks, click "Yes" to allow the command to proceed >
- In the Command Prompt window, type the following command: Shutdown /s /t 0
Reference: Shutdown Syntax
- When the shutdown is complete, perform a Hard Reset:
- Remove the AC adapter
- If the battery is not sealed, then remove the battery
- Press the Power Button for 30 seconds
- If removed, replace the battery
- Plug in the AC adapter
- Set the BIOS to Defaults
- Press the Power button to start the notebook >>
- Immediately tap repeatedly on the ESC key to force the notebook into the Startup Menu >
- Press F10 to get into the BIOS menu >
- Press F5 (or perhaps F9 -- follow the instructions for correct key) to Load Defaults >
- Use the Arrow keys to find and Select "Yes"
- Press F10 to Save Changes >> Use the Arrow keys to find and Select "Yes"
- Boot the system and log in
- Check for any remaining "Validity bits"
- Open a new Windows Explorer Window
- Navigate to the following path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files
- If you find a folder named AuthenTec, then Delete the folder
- Install the Validity Sensor Driver
- Find your downloaded Validity Sensor driver sp54999 Validity Sensor V4.3.205.0
- Right-Click on the downloaded package and "Run as Administrator"
- Restart / Reboot the computer and log in
- Install your downloaded HP SimplePass software package
- Find the downloaded installation package sp63224 HP SimplePass V6.0.100.276 Win7-8
- Right-Click on the downloaded package and "Run as Administrator"
- Restart / Reboot the computer and log in
- Check the version, if correct, then continue
- Set up just the basics in HP SimplePass: enroll fingers
- Restart / Reboot the computer and log in
- Import the .tsd file
====================================================================================
I hope this helps.

Dear Dragon-Fur,
Your instructions are extensive and the do make sense as far as I can see. I followed them and found some deviations (there simply are too many different versions of Windows and OEM versions seem to differ as well) which I would be happy to share with you if you wish to improve/enhance you package. Please tell me how to get the corrected tect to you, it is too long to post.
To summarize:
The removal had a few deviations but I think I managed to follow the spirit of your instructions.
Then came the install:
• Install the Validity Sensor Driver
1. Find your downloaded Validity Sensor driver sp54999 Validity Sensor V4.3.205.0
2. Right-Click on the downloaded package and "Run as Administrator"
The message "A newer version of Validity WBF DDK was already installed. OK?" appears.
I declined by clicking X. Windows tells me the program was probably not installed correctly etc. I rejected.
I tried to install sp55109.exe, which gave the same message and I said OK. No warning from Windows afterwards.
Reboot.
Fingerprint Sensor does not accept fingerprints during login. Have to log in with password.
Tried to install sp56403.exe. "A newer version of Validity WBF DDK was already installed. OK?" OK.
"The program was probably not installed correctly etc". I picked "Repeat with recommended settings."
"A newer version of Validity WBF DDK was already installed. OK?" OK.
Driver is 4.3.118.0 (Start>Config>Hardware>Device Manager>Biometrics>Validity Sensors>Properties)
• Install your downloaded HP SimplePass software package
1. Find the downloaded installation package sp63224 HP SimplePass V6.0.100.276 Win7-8
2. Right-Click on the downloaded package and "Run as Administrator"
Yes, there it is again: TrueAPI(x64) missing. Here I get stuck.
3. Restart / Reboot the computer and log in
Fingerprint reader is active but it rejects the once enrolled fingers. Login with password.
4. Check the version, if correct, then continue
Simplepass was not installed .
(rest of instructions are meaningless, there is no Simplepass)
After this, I ran:
C:\ProgramData\Downloaded Installations\DigitalPersona\{8D1BBECB-FE30-441D-9637-0E9229637A98}\Setup.msi
This installs DigitalPersona Personal 4.10
DigitalPerson can not see the Fingerprint sensor.
Tried to install sp56403.exe. "A newer version of Validity WBF DDK was already installed. OK?" OK.
So, the newest driver for the fingerprint sensor does not install.
I moved the folder c:\Program Files\Validity Sensors to a different disk, then rebooted.
Again, tried to install sp56403.exe. "A newer version of Validity WBF DDK was already installed. OK?" OK.
Pretty depressing eh?
No Fingerprint Logon any more.
No Simplepass.
Summarizing:
There seems to be something like Validity WBF DDK that we don't want and which prevents updating the driver.
There seems to be needed something like TrueAPI(x64) that we don't have and which prevents installing Simplepass.
Well, I am close to giving up and do a restore. Or can you think of someting genious?
Hope you can....
Ben

Ben,
I do not work for HP - like everyone on the forum, I am a volunteer. Most of us either have personal working experience of the subjects we support or still work in the Industry in some capacity. We are all owners and users of HP Technology.
You can send me a private message by clicking on my Avatar / Name. The setup is similar to creating a post and the message goes to my private Inbox. I do not give out personal contact information; thanks for understanding.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The main theme concerning the drivers seems to be that the previous driver is NOT being deleted for some reason. Once you Uninstall AND Delete the driver, it should ... you know... go away - be permanently gone - poof!
Even assuming the system is straightening itself "after the fact", SimplePass should work. Although I do not know why it is not working, I can list some things that might impact the setup.
- Make sure your .NET Framework is installed at least to level .NET Framework 3.5 - higher is fine, lower is not so good.
- You might look around the system and see what it was doing around the date on which this all fell apart in the first place. Look at possible Windows Updates, personal programs you might have installed or updated, and perhaps take a look at the Event Viewer to see if any anomolies are apparent around the same date / time. This is largely just a bit of detective work -- at best, it might show up something obvious. Check to see if your Anti-Virus Security software has updated recently, too.
- Another method to check what the system thinks it was doing at a given time is to check the list of your available Restore Points. There is little detail available; nonetheless, the list will give you an idea if the system thinks things changed. If you find a Restore Point that does relate to when your software started balking, AND assuming your personal files are backed up, you might try setting the system back to that Restore Point.
Control Panel > icon view > System > System Protection
Restoring Windows to a Previous Point (Windows 7)
NOTE: Even assuming you do Restore the System, the very old version of SimplePass (Version 5.3) that you were using before this all went sideways is likely to fail again -- V5.3 is not all that stable compared to the later versions. "Going back in time" would give you a place to regroup and start again.
Remember: Driver FIRST, SimplePass Second
Disclaimer: The following bits were compiled from a couple of my other files - forgive any errors. Nothing here should make anything worse -- DO create a New Restore Point before making any changes.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Fingerprint Driver
So, the next thing is to get a clean install of a Validity Driver. As I said earlier, I think you can still use the older "205" driver with HP SimplePass 6.0.100.276 -- if you can use it, great. If not, you can try to install and use the later driver (V4.3.301.0).
Windows 8:
Windows key + X > M (Opens the Device Manager) > Biometric Devices > Validity Sensor >>
OR
Windows 7:
Control Panel > icon view > Device Manager > Biometric Devices > Validity Sensor >>
Next:
- Right-Click on the Validity Sensor driver and "Uninstall" AND tick to DELETE the old Driver
- After the procedure completes, shut down the computer and perform the Hard Reset
- Boot the system and log in
- Check - the Validity Driver should be removed / deleted / uninstalled.
- Install your downloaded Validity Sensor driver -- it is probably in your Downloads folder
- AGAIN: Restart / Reboot the computer and log in
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Repair ATTrueApiMini64 components
- Install the new downloaded HP SimplePass installation package over the top of any existing SimplePass version.
IMPORTANT:
It is possible; indeed it is a symptom of this issue that the installation may present with an error or other failure. The point of the installation of the latest version is to proceed as far as possible. If the installation of the newer version succeeds, you are DONE!
If you encounter installation errors, then Continue…
- Check to assure the following file exists in your computer:
C:\ProgramData\Downloaded Installations\ATTrueApiMin64.msi
If file ATTrueApiMin64.msi does NOT exist in your computer, then you may download a copy from this SkyDrive source. Find and copy the version that most closely matches your HP SimplePass version.
NOTE:
After downloading the file, you can rename it if you like, to remove the “version bits”.
- Copy the .msi file to C:\ProgramData\Downloaded Installations\ ATTrueApiMin64.msi
- Right-Click on the program named ATTrueApiMin64.msi >> Select Repair
This may be necessary:
Repair HP SimplePass
Repair HP SimplePass using the .msi installer
- Starting at C:\ProgramData\Downloaded Installations\
- Look for and go to a folder structured similar to this (numbers and characters will vary):
{6B2F4DB7-B8FC-4558-BFE1-F4AA821844E5}
Example:
C:\ProgramData\Downloaded Installations\{6B2F4DB7-B8FC-4558-BFE1-F4AA821844E5}
- Right-Click on HP SimplePass.msi ** >> Select “Repair”
- Restart / Reboot the computer and log in
** You may copy HP SimplePass.msi and its English companion 1033.MST file from the following resource. Download the version mostly closely related to your SimplePass version.
HP SimplePass.msi and 1033.MST
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
A last note on Digital Persona:
One can, in some cases, upgrade from Digital Persona to HP SimplePass -- that is, assuming one installs an upgraded Validity driver capable of supporting HP SimplePass. Digital Persona was written to run on specific machine types -- I have not heard of someone being able to downgrade from HP SimplePass to Digital Persona except in cases where the computer hardware was built to run DP.
Your computer runs HP SimplePass - best stay away from anything flavored "Digital Persona" -- it may make things a lot worse -- you might end up with C code program errors - scary looking, if nothing else.
===========================================================================================
The thing that concerns me is that none of this may work -- even assuming the advice is correct, the entanglement might be too great to overcome. You might need to reinstall the Operating System - or at least hit the OS with a Repair disk. I would think about reinstalling if you cannot untangle the API bits.
Good Luck!
